Stop/start

I have this. I quite like it - does it save fuel? Well, if the engine is off when it would otherwise be running, it must save something! And it must be better for the folk who are breathing in all the fumes. As to stop-start traffic, I've noticed that if I come to a clean stop the engine will cut off, but if I then inch forward a little the engine comes back on but doesn't go off again. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0

I don't hate it in principle, but all the cars I have driven it with only turn the engine off when the footbrake is fully depressed. As soon as you put the car in neutral, put the handbrake on and rest your foot, the engine restarts. Completely useless!
Also I found the delay when setting off dangerous when pulling into roundabouts. Don't know if they are all like that.0 -
Tried out a Peugeot 308 automatic with stop start, no problem until I stopped at a roundabout and the slight delay restarting dissuaded me from buying the car.0

"Stuff" that happens automatically when it doesn't need to!
I hate it!
Especially when you can't switch it off permanently.
Had a little Skoda a year or two back as a courtesy car.
Delivery mileage. Nice little car. It'd have been a very nice little car except for the silly stop start.0 -

Not sure why anyone would experience a delay when entering a roundabout, unless your cars work differently to my Fiesta, either you are in gear with the cluthc depressed ready to go (engine running) or in neutral (engine stopped) and the engine will restart as soon as the clutch is depressed. I've never experienced any delay at a roundabout due to stop/start.0

It will do as #14 refers to thier car being an automatic
Mine can do the same but the system is predictable enough to anticipate what will happen and drive accordingly.0 -
Mazda 3 (and seen it in a BMW 1 series iirc, wasn't mine) and Mazda - CX (work loan car), only on if you put the car in neutral and take off the clutch. Use it all the time if I know I will be waiting for a while e.g. at lights I know the sequence for. I don't commute in the car as driving in rush hour, the least of your problems is a stop start engine, the other wear and tear is far more of an issue. The odd time in a motorway jam, given you only move every few minutes often it's not an issue at all, if you're constantly moving, just don't activate it by not taking the car out of gear (or whatever triggers it)
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

I found it a nuisance on the test drive, the salesman assures me it can be turned off so we'll see when it arrives. Maybe it's because I drive automatics, when you come off the brake onto the loud pedal you expect something to happen immediately. On my fifth car with the system from four different manufacturers. 150,000+ miles.
Number of times it has caused a problem or cost me money? Nil.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0 -

It's a problem with automatics as it turns off whilst in drive with the break depressed. My wife has a Kia Sorento automatic - when you stop at a roundabout it turns off the engine and there's enough delay when trying to pull away from the roundabout to be dangerous.
It can be turned off manually at the beginning of each trip, but that's still a pain. Can't be permanently turned off on the Kia.0
