  • I was back in record time from my little shopping trip to the next town along. Did I say little?! I seemed to come back like a packhorse! Just timed it right for DS popping in for a coffee on his way to work.

Now then, now then! About this decluttering! Can I just say it's not visible clutter so there's only me knows it's there but nontheless the problem needs addressing! The bedroom that the 2 youngest DGDs share resembles Smyths toy store and is the only room with visible clutter! They have outgrown a lot of the books, toys and games, never play with them but won't let me get rid of anything! I have decided if I sneak the odd 2/3 items out at a time they won't notice! One area addressed!

Also in that bedroom are big sliding wardrobes full of boxes and this is one of the main problem areas. The contents are mostly sentimental and I don't know what to do with them. I know when I have gone the kids won't want to keep them. Three full set china dinner services, my grandma's wedding tea set, my mum's wedding tea set and dozens of boxes of the plates and ginger jars my mum had displayed on the delft rack that ran all round her lounge, dining room and hall. None of the latter are of any great value, they are mostly seconds she picked up on market stalls over the years. But what to do with all this stuff. You have only to watch Bargain Hunt to realise there is no value in old china and I doubt charity shops would want it all. But I can't bring myself to take it to the tip.

More toys crammed in the big area under the stairs in the hall. They never come out of there and I doubt they would miss them! I may start there.

I have 3 ottomans stuffed full of photograph albums. Mostly taken on our travels and others family photos and family occasions. (It saved a 4th ottoman of albums when digital cameras and camera phones took over!)

There are boxes upon boxes of old family photos, all my family history stuff etc. but that lot are going nowhere!

I still need to get rid of loads of clothes and I think that will be the easiest job when I can get on with it. Bob's clothes are all still as they were left and I can't bring myself to do anything with them. DS says he will help me when I feel ready but it upsets me to even think about it.

So it's not an easy declutter is it? And don't get me started on the garage as that is packed to the rafters with stuff "that might come in one day". Is it any wonder I am overwhelmed before I start?

    xx

If you have Netflix, have a look at the marie kondo thing. There is specifically one prgramme dealing with someone who has lost someone, seemed to help her.
What I was more thinking about was her method of doing it, and the order in which things are done, starting with your own clothes, then moving to other things so you get used to decluttering before you try doing anything that has emotional value to you.

I accidentally did this with photographs last year. I have quite a few and some of them no longer need tobe kept or I actually don't need to keep them, ones featuring people who I no longer spend time with, the ones with the thumb over the lens etc. I was thinking about Weemidgies album for her daughter and thinking about doing somehting similar with the photos i have, making them a life story of friendship and family for example for some of them...But just keeping the best ones.
It's a big old job though...

PS only three dinner services? should ve met my mother - she loved china, had 11 of them, only used at christmas, so I say, get them out and use them if you like them.
Local auctions could help with some of your items, or if you don't mind giving them away, CS's. or if you want them to be used, there are a few people who supply vintage china for weddings, maybe one of those would be interested..

Wow yes that sounds like a huge task TA How about getting someone in to help ...good friend maybe or sticking with the one drawer at a time rule guess it will take time but it will get done Freecycle could help with your china.

I have the garage from hell too and cant bring myself to start it as its cold and dark and I rather suspect mice have been in there  but I have set a goal to get a skip in the spring and get rid then get a door that fits

Work going slowly today ...think everyone is in slug mode so may have to join them and continue the cake declutter :o

    Afternoon all
A bit late as I had a lie in this morning. I woke with a banging headache though, too much partying I expect _party_. So please keep the noise level to a minimum , especially those hoovering :rotfl:.
We decided to go window shopping as I need a new clock / radio, mine is working fine but unless I press my nose against the thing I can no longer see the readout . I could put my glasses on I suppose but by then I'd be wide awake :(. Anyway had a trip to curry's to look in person as it were, but they only had 2 to choose from, so I left empty handed. Window shopped in N*xt, where Mr Fix It tried to get me to part with my xmas money on a down jacket, but I could not justify paying that much for one item. So I have returned home still clutching my money, as did he :D. However it was my turn to pay for coffee apparently, I'm sure it wasn't but we had one anyway and I paid ( anything for a quiet life and I suppose it's our only vice these days ). We called in Al*i on the way home for hot dog rolls and I only spent £8 :j
This afternoon we are picking up the DGC from school and bring them back for tea, which will be hot dogs as requested by Mr Fix It and DGS and there's chocolate roll or a mince pie for pudding. DD will then collect them after her late Monday meeting.
We are back on the weight loss wagon too, I shall weigh myself later but I am hoping I haven't added too much extra weight over Xmas. I had enough to get rid of before that !!!
TA I have joined MrsSD's decluttering thread and I am not doing too badly. Baby steps and all that. It didn't help that one of my kitchen drawers collapsed yesterday from too much stuff..... and 14 tea cloths
Right I'm off to chop some onions, boo hoo .

Snoozer I'm sorry that Steve had a bad day yesterday. I know that has an effect on you too as we're in the same boat. Mr Fix It was diagnosed 4 years ago this week and he's still fighting. ( Honestly thought he wouldn't see the 1st Xmas ). Hopefully the good days will outweigh the bad. Hugs to both of you.
Dumpling glad the anti b's are working. Look after yourself.
Sending healing vibes to the poorly people and hugs to all.
I hope everyone has had a good day, especially those going back to the grind.
    lots of love nan xx

    Afternoon!

TA - that's a job an a half you've got. Think you've got a great idea, sneak out the inconsequential stuff and then tackle the difficult things later when you're more ready. As for photos, I scanned in every single one I had and then burnt the originals in the back garden. Now I look at them more and have made a couple of digital photo albums and even make postcards from them (Touchnote). And I've got more space now. The china problem... there may be a lovely little tea shop that you know that may like some old-fashioned crockery? I'll have that problem eventually too and it's so sad to see how little these much cherished tea sets go for nowadays. I don't keep anything for best anymore!

NannyWidow - have you thought about something like an Amazon Echo / Dot? It's controlled by voice, I often use in the middle of the night to ask the time. Got radio / alarm etc. Not sure if it'll be any good for you but I swear by it. I've set it up to control some lights etc in the house too.

Class this morning was fine though a couple of students have to redo some work.

My lovely neighbour woodman called round earlier to show me a couple of chopping boards he's making for me. He had one last week and now has two more, one in cherry wood and one in sweet chestnut. They just need branding burnt on and then a few layers of oil before I can get my hands on them properly.

The wind is still very high here, I've got the secondary air control almost closed on the woodburner and still the wood is burning high.

I've had my eggs for breakfast, soup for lunch and there's some defrosted chilli for later. There's so much to use up.

Now, if I may have my new chair to myself again I'm off to sit in it!
  • Speky, good to see you back!! Our book club goes like this

We congregate round our designated tables in the library, ask each other if we've read/finished the book.

The book, by the way, is usually chosen by the librarian who "does" the book club. I have a theory that she gives us whatever she's got enough of in their stockroom, but I may be being cynical...…

We can ask to read a book that we've heard about, if they have it.

We start off talking about the book. Conversation digresses because something in the book reminds someone of something their great aunt once did, or something that Granddad said when they were little.
Everyone joins in with reminiscences until we are called to order by one of our bossier members "Ladies! who hasn't spoken about the book yet" Well most of us actually, we're too busy nattering on about nowt in particular

We go back to discussing the book, then start looking at the new book for this month.
Conversation breaks out "Oh, I've read this , it was really good" Someone else thinks it reminds them of the book we read last year," was it July or August, you know, there was a woman in, and her husband left her" and so on and so on None of the others remember this book. Our bossy member intervenes again, but can hardly make herself heard over the hubbub of people talking about everything under the sun, sometimes even the books!!

    That's our book club Speky!!
  • OL, I've just read your post from yesterday about your Bil, how sad.

Dementia is the most cruel illness.
  • Progress report!! I am up and running! Two charity bags of my clothes ready to put out in the morning for the Age UK van. As I was passing the bookcase I wondered if there was anything in there I could whip out. Result - a big bag full of books including The Iliad and The Odyssey which I have been meaning to read for years! I know for a fact I won't now so in the bag they went, along with some unused cookery books and unread history books. They will be outside in the morning too awaiting the van.

I think I have done enough for today and all things considered I reckon I have been pretty ruthless (for me!) Good idea GERS re an olde worlde tea room wanting the unwanted china. None hereabouts but quite a few up in Haworth. Might be worth asking them. Also DD mentioned her ex MIL (we are all still on good terms!) she is into making craft items to sell and often uses pretty china cups and saucers as holders for things. DD is going to ask her if she can use any.

Have a nice evening folks xx
