Let's learn a little about your system(don't worry, you won't be giving away any personal details).
Go to this page and download CPU-Z
CPU-Z does not need to be installed. Just unzip the files in a directory and run the .exe. In order to remove the program, just delete the files, and that's it.
Once you run the .exe file, it will produce a report. It will tell you what kind of memory is installed in your computer and some other details.
The Motherboard and memory type are what is important to us.0 -

I'm afraid it is XP.
I ran CPU-Z it revealed that the motherboard is a HP 0850 (Model), the memory gives 256 mb but no type however the properties section of 'My Computer' indicates that the system has 192 mb.
Thanks for the help thus far.0 -
I ran MSconfig and at the start the following programmes are all running, could some be disabled at startup?....
Use Process Explorer - it is free and has been bought out by MS. This will show all the hidden stuff too and what has called them like all the svchost entries.
and while its switched on run eventvwr and have a look in the logs.
If your system is slow due to mem/cpu, you might be better off going back to 2k
want memory - google crucial memory and select your laptop type, they will tell you max size, specs and will have an idea of the price tooGOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.

Can you run CPU-Z again? This time go to the Tab at the end(I think it's About and then txt dump(or similar)
It should produce a .text file and leave it on the desktop.
Open the text file and copy and paste the Motherboard and memory information here.
Better still is if you could post the whole page here. You can choose HTML Dump, but that has a little less info, but that will be fine.
Can we have some details of your laptop? Model no. etc.
It could be that it takes PC 2700 DDR Ram.
Either way, 192MB is woefully inadequate and is probably the cause of your slowdown.0 -

It is likely that your missing 64Mb of memory is used up by a graphics card built in to your motherboard.
If you decide to buy some more memory you ould use the system scanner or memory advisor tools at http://www.crucial.com/uk/ to help find out what memory is suitable for your PC. They are quite easy to use and will offer suggested upgrades. Crucial are a good memory supplier.
If you could post the model of you laptop we could check to see how easy an upgrade is. Some models have the memory under a plastic cover on the bottom of the machine (easy) but others locate it under the keyboard or worse (a bit harder!).

Not really relevant but I dream of that much.:TEither way, 192MB is woefully inadequate and is probably the cause of your slowdown.
I've just got hold of a Pentium 2 (via freecycle) to sort to give to a young relative,
Spec is: 350mhzP2, 64mb ram, 8gb HD, PLUS they have Win98 (6gb) dual booting with XP Home.:rotfl::rotfl:
Don't worry it's having the dban treatment.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

224MB is right. As basill pointed out earlier, some RAM is utilised by the on-board graphics. 32MB in this case.
Yes, you can replace RAM in laptops.
You may need to find the manual, in book form or online, to be sure of where the module is situated.0
