Mis-sold car hire upgrade

Unfortunately its your word against theirs? You may get a good will gesture? or push the supposedly upgrade as being inadequate in terms of car supplied?0

You’re right Undeterred, it is. Thanks for your suggestion but we knew what we were being upgraded to, I don’t feel I can or should claim now that it was not an acceptable upgrade as we were happy to pay an extra £10 to have a Mokka over an Astra. The type of car we were upgraded to is not the problem and I’m not going to start making up concerns that we didn’t have at the time. We were happy with the car, we just didn’t realise £10 meant £10 per day. But thanks so much for trying to help0

WiltshireMum wrote: »Hello Ioskie,
Thanks for your comment. I wasn't not present at the desk with my husband so my memory of what he told me happened is fresh because we just had the conversation this last week when I saw the charge on the invoice.
I can assure you he 100% told me on the day inside the office that it was £10 for the duration. Yes we were frazzled and rushing but we've had to be so careful with money when he shouted over that we were having an upgrade I told him we cant afford it, I clearly remember that. I can also describe to you the other staff members present, conversations that were had with them and also other car hire agents while my son was toddling around the office. We were stressed but my memory is very good and I'm not sure what would make you believe it isn't.
The only confusion was my husband thought he might have paid cash but that was an assumption we came to when there was no £10 charge on my card. I said he must have paid cash (I wasn't present a time the desk) and he said he really didn't think so but if there was no credit card charge then he must have done.
I know we're stupid for not checking the paperwork but we aren't so stupid as to make up details of what happened. My husband has a very good memory and he's not daft, he also wouldn't lie to me telling me he queried the £228 if he didn't. Implying that he's making up details is actually quite offensive. We're an honest (if naïve and silly) couple who have been ripped off and now I'm looking for advice on how to handle the situation, I'm not looking for criticism and accusations. I'm also not saying this was a deliberate rip off, the sales guy seemed really nice and I hope he just assumed we would know he meant £10 a day and he didn't see what my husband pointed at on the invoice or didn't hear properly when he queried the £228. I don't like to think of anyone deliberately ripping us off, that makes the whole situation even worse so I can't think like that. So thank you for your comments but please refrain from accusing and insulting, it doesn't help me.
Oh dear WiltshireMum you sound in a very fragile state. Whilst my post was not what you wanted to hear none of it was/is insulting or accusatory, maybe just not what you wanted to hear.
But if you ask a question you have to be prepared to accept that people's views may differ from your own.
I think that you have made your mind up that you are in the right so why ask?0 -
I think you need to re-read what you wrote. I'm sorry if I misinterpreted it but I'm not sure how else I was supposed to feel when you say my comments 'don't add up'. Also there's no need to be condescending, I'm not fragile I'm livid that we've been conned out of so much money and my husband didn't spot the charge. Yes, I know we are morally in the right here as we have been charged much more than we approved however I acknowledge that my husband missed an opportunity to identify what was going on therefore legally I'm not sure we have a leg to stand on so I wanted to see if others had experienced the same thing. I'm open to all constructive comments/suggestions but I take offence to being accused of being dishonest. We're good people, I don't understand why you would think we aren't0

I'm saying nothing, I might give the wrong answer :huh:0

If you've experienced the same issue society's child I'd love to hear what you have to say please0

Even I have (ignorantly) once accepted a Mokka as free upgrade from my usual booked Astra. You live and learn. It is a gas-guzzler and will not match the advertised mpg of your booked Astra (46mpg for the Astra is usually advertised when you buy online). The petrol Mokka I once ended up with barely achieved 36mpg whereas a 50+mpg Nissan Qashquai diesel Tekna or similar might have been worth the extra £10 per day over Christmas, but a Mokka? Very doubtful. Never again for me anyway.
The car hire staff know which cars are most liked and disliked and I wouldn't mind betting that the salesperson got a pat on the back for getting rid of the 'dog' most regulars dislike for an entire 19 day block at an extra £10 a day!
Did you keep a note of how much fuel you used and how many miles you did?
The uneconomic mpg well below the mpg advertised for the original Astra could be another angle you could hit them with.0 -
Have you still got the paperwork your husband signed? If not you can ask for a copy.
I suspect it will detail the price of the upgrade but at least you will know for certain what he signed.0 -
Hi Peter,
The total miles was noted on the return documentation, it was something like 550. The fuel used I can work out approximately by looking on the credit card statement as all fuel was charged to the credit card. We didn’t keep receipts though so without making some calls to the garages I can’t find out what the per litre charge was. We only filled up 3 times so we didn’t spend a fortune on fuel.
Oh also I realised I didn’t reply to your question about the extra insurance. We didn’t pay anything extra for insurance/excess protection as we have an annual policy that protects our hire car excess. It only cost about £30 and covers tyres/windscreen etc.
Thank you for all your help!0 -
Hi Waamo,
No we don't still have it. He can't remember if he actually signed anything with the upgrade charge on or if the guy just showed him the paperwork.
As it was my card used I feel like I should have been the one to be shown the paperwork but unfortunately I wasn't.
Thanks for your comment0
