I'm so sorry to hear about your plants Pablosmummy. I hope you can rescue some of your plants as its so soul destroying to start again.
Rain and thunderstorms forecast for here later today, i'm not looking forward to it although the grass is in desperate need for water.
Spent most of the afternoon in the greenhouse yesterday sweeping, throwing out spent plants, moving things around and generally tidying up. The little robin that has his territory by the greenhouse was helping, darting in to help himself to bugs when I was moving the pots about. He must have a brood to feed, his nest is in the Virginia creeper on the wall next to the greenhouse. Has anyone had swifts arrive this year, we have had none and usually we have several pairs nesting in the various buildings. Bats seem to be a bit down on numbers as well - all a bit sad.0 -
Thankfully I just got a thorough soaking yesterday
We've got swifts here, bats do seem to be down a little, but they're here - I've the recordings to prove it.
Not much else to report here - repurposed some hoop netting with straight canes to protect the blackcurrants, finished fitting the weather station (anemometer now atop a broomhandle attached to the sturdier greenhouse) and I've still plenty of potting on to do - In fact I need to make a new list...
Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?0 -
Jealous of those of you who are picking cucumbers/and or courgettes. Mine haven't even started to flower yet! lolFebruary wins: Theatre tickets0

Ok so I've had a look this morning. Pakchoi, lettuce obviously destroyed but I already have some more of them started so that's fine.
Strawberries and apples are all covered in bruises, I'm assuming that means they are destroyed? Out of around forty strawberry plants, I've counted 7 undamaged fruits.
Now I'm not sure on the rest tbh. The cucumbers are only small still anyway, no flowers yet but what leaves they did have are all damaged or on the floor in bits, same for pumpkins. Do you think there's any chance they'll keep growing?
My tomatoes are ...still standing however I can see alot of hail marks all over, up the stems, they list about half their leaves and a few branches so I guess that's just a case of wait and see...
Everything else is just a salvage for next year job I think.
OH said we will go and buy more bedding plants on the weekend because there is no way they will survive so I might see if they still have any cucumber or pumpkin seedlings, even tomatoes and just replace what I still can.
It could.be worse, the infants side of the school was open today but the juniors half has been completely flooded, pouring in through the electrics apparently! At least mine is just plants and not the roof!May Grocery Challenge -£216/4000 -
Oh, I'm so sorry pablosmummy!
I don't know if they will survive, but I'm always of the opinion that it won't hurt to still nurture them a bit and wait and see. Worked last year with a chilli plant of mine that looked like it would amount to nothing. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
Yes I am sure you will still find some cucumber and tomato plants for sale. I have seen them at local garden centres recently. You could have some of mine but judging by the weather you have had you are in a different part of the country. I am in Herefordshire.
See what you can salvage and buy what you can get hold of because you don't want it to ruin your summer.
The weather here has been very heavy rain all morning. I was up on the Malvern Hills earlier and got absolutely soaked through - pretty much had the hills to myself though which was nice.0 -
The DIY sheds have probably still got stocks, my local Homebase had some earlier this week - both not bad/full price plants, and not too bad/needs some TLC/reduced ones
Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?0 -
I saw that my local Morrison had some healthy looking, fruiting, strawberry plants at lunchtime. Didn't look at the prices though xFebruary wins: Theatre tickets0

Possibly not to late to sow now and get a later crop if you're lucky! Always worth trying if yiu have some spare seeds0

Thank you everyone, I'm going to head to the local garden centre ( oh well what a shame...) This weekend and see what I can get. Do you think I'll be able to buy small sugar pumpkins or some other kind of small pumpkin? I don't have the room for the bigger ones.
Also managed to salvage a very small amount of Pak choi so having it with some tofu for dinner so I'm feeling alot more positive now.
We've had more really heavy rain today, my lawn has just flooded completely, rain is even coming in through the window vents ,I've had to run around shutting them again! Where's summer gone??May Grocery Challenge -£216/4000
