Picked some more raspberries and ate my first home grown strawberry, it was really, really nice. I don't have too many more to ripen, I think I read that first season you sometimes don't get much of a crop.
I have cherry toms appearing and flowers on the other varieties but will have to water the whole garden later as it's been over 30 deg this weekend.0 -
I finally built my pumpkin support, I've gone for a ladder style pyramid trellis with the aim of a plant growing up each side so we will see how that actually goes! Both plants have started to flower,.only males yet but I can see a few females starting to appear.
Has anyone trained a gooseberry bush at all? I have the three which I got from the t and m offer, and they are all growing well, loads of fruit that should be ready soon but they take up so.much space! On gardeners world monty was tying his to canes but mine just seems to grow sideways not up! I wouldn't even know where to start with getting them trainedMay Grocery Challenge -£216/4000 -
Thank you Suffolk Lass I have just seen your post. I did feel a lot more sore and stiff this morning and my back was hurting. I think the adrenaline masks it at first. My husband was horrified when he got home and saw how much of the tree was down - he was imagining a little branch!
How on earth did a neighbours fence fall on you?
I am sorry to hear you have been suffering with back and shoulder pain it can be so debilitating. I get shoulder pain that flares up every now and then caused by carpal tunnel and its no fun.0 -
Peas - so we harvested this weekend. Most of them, there are still a few that are not ready yet. Will they flower and produce again, or is that it for those plants and they should be dug up?
Our harvest was tiny! haha Should have planted more than we did, but live and learn!February wins: Theatre tickets0 -

with the constant rain over the last few months my pea crop was a flop except for the ones in the planters. They should be ready in a few weeks.
So I planted a whole new batch this weekend and its already sprouting nicely.
Its been a crap year for me this year if I'm honest.
I'm buying a heater grow mat next year and my even invest in a small greenhouse.:jTo be Young AGAIN!!!!...what a wonderfull thought!!!!!:rolleyes:0 -
So this is why I love this grow your own lark:
I have had success with things this year that I never normally have success with.
Have had a good crop of mange tout that I never normally grow.
The raspberries just keep on coming. Had more all ready than I had all of last year!
Even having a bit of success with spring onions and should be able to pick some in a couple of weeks.
On the other hand my courgettes are still pathetic and these are usually one of my best crops. Have two tiny courgettes appearing though so maybe all is not lost.
Had lots and lots of strawberries and the freezer is full of little bags ready for smoothies or topping overnight oats.
Cucumbers are slow coming but plants look healthy .
Had first pickings of my cherry tomatoes, cant remember what variety they are as a fellow allotmanteer gave me the seeds last year. Will have to check with him.
Lots of sweet peas as well.
Onions arent the best. A lot of my red onions have really thick necks which I have never had before. I guess they are still ok to use but not good for storing?Make £10 a Day Feb .....£75.... March... £65......April...£90.....May £20.....June £35.......July £600 -

I picked my peas a bit smaller this year (so earlier) and it means the plants are still green - these plants are producing a second picking as the plants are still growing. The peas I missed - they are big jobs now and the plants are starting to go brown and I do not think I will get a second crop from these.
That is my only experience to offer as normally I leave it later and don't expect the repeat peas.Save £12k in 2025 #2 I am at £4863.32 out of £6000 after May (81.05%)
OS Grocery Challenge in 2025 I am at £1286.68/£3000 or 42.89% of my annual spend so far

Thank you SuffokLass, that is helpful. The plants are still green, so I'll leave them a couple more weeks and see if anything happens. If not, I'll uproot them and use the space for something else.
My courgettes have been trying to produce, as the female flowers have been there, sadly none of the male flowers have decided to join the party yet, so I've had 3 unfertilised flowers between the two plants so far. I have pulled 2 of them off one of the plants this morning. One of the male flowers on there looks like it is about to open, so fingers crossed!
Can we still eat the unfertilized ones? They are pretty small.
We harvested some spring onions on Sunday. They didn't look very big above the surface. Quite skinny looking even. But there were big bulbs under the surface!
Impatiently waiting on my toms. Loads of flowers, but no toms yet. I've been tapping them regularly, and I can see a few tiny baby tomatoes on a few, but they haven't started growing yet. And I've had one that looks like a baby tomato, that is doing nothing still. Looks like the one in this thread, which apparently started growing much later in the season for the grower! https://www.houzz.com/discussions/2201463/is-this-blossom-drop-or-a-baby-tomato
Can't remember if I already said, but the pepper plants are now going great guns!
The purple brussel sprout plant is HUGE, and looking very healthy. MIL is very happy about that, DH less so! haha. I was just interested to try! I did underestimate it's size though! hahaha
I don't know about the onions K Mare, I'm sorry. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon.
I prob won't be on for a few days after today. We are off to DH's uncles tomorrow, and then going to Peppa Pig World on Thursday and Friday to celebrate DD's 3rd birthday. She still doesn't knowThe weather is supposed to be beautiful both there and here, but not too hot. Hopefully everything survives our few days away.
Happy growing everyone!February wins: Theatre tickets0 -

Finally, almost back in the saddle today. Had a satori moment (aka eureka moment) in terms of courgettes thanks to you guys - I think I know what I've been doing wrong previously in terms of positioning, not helping with pollination & why some fruit just go yellow & whither (not enough pollen). Garlic seems to be a write off, but i've some very nice looking onions, cabbage, potatoes, padron peppers & tomatoes (still green but getting darker). Raspberries & blackcurrants also coming along nicely
Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?0
