I wasn't referring specifically to this thread and the opening post.

I was 'speaking' generally - across all of the fora I post on, not just MSE and not just P,V & W board.

So was I. I don't think this thread, which is basically a moan fest about the forum, is a typical example of how the forum runs.

    Neither do I.
But I acknowledge that other people may see (read) things differently.

Katrina, with all due respect your reply was exactly what I had in mind when I replied to this thread.
It comes across as so abrasive telling me my opinion is not true and challenging me to prove things.

Internet forums can be fact based but opinions are equally important if not more so. Facts can be sought from search engines. Take opinion out of things and Internet forums are dead.

Even when you have factually been proved wrong you are unwilling to own that mistake and laugh it off and blame the OP. I think you are unwittingly part of the problem.

That’s not true and you know it.

Feel free to link some examples if you don’t agree Billy. There’s plenty of posts on the first page to look at to prove your point...

Just out of curiosity...do you think that the OP's post came across as pretty abrasive?
    Specifically this:

I think we all have a choice to reply or not. If I don't agree with what an OP is saying or how they are saying it I choose to ignore it and not reply in that thread.

I think people enjoy being deliberately combative. Maybe that is their personality or maybe they are shy in 'real life' and the safety of hiding behind a computer screen gives them some confidence.

I'm perfectly aware that highlighting this behaviour could lead to accusations that I'm being combative and difficult. I'm fine with that though and will continue to call out people who are being deliberately rude or abrasive for 'likes' or cheap laughs from internet strangers.

But did you find it abrasive or not?

I don't think you're being combative or difficult, just maybe reluctant to answer my (perfectly reasonable imho) question.

I don't see a problem with someone challenging your opinion and asking you to show some examples when it would be easy to look through some threads on here to show what you mean.

Opinions can be wrong if they are based on incorrect facts.

Also it's quite ironic when you mention most posts on threads don't address the OP's question/request. But in post #15 they did exactly what the OP requested and you don't agree with it :rotfl:

I didn't find the OP abrasive if I'm honest. If he/she had singled someone out in particular I would have had an issue.

I think the OP gave a good opportunity for people to share their experience. I would have expected several posts saying 'I haven't personally found that to be true' and several more saying 'I think the OP has a point'

Instead some clever and hugely funny person went straight in for the grammar attack and another poster started to demand evidence even though an example was in this very thread!!!!

I asked for evidence of you stating there is a standard process across MSE posts where people just use their post history and grammar to discredit them, you know thats not the case. Does it happen, of course, but its not the 'MSE routine' as you imply. It is always triggered by something.

Yes I trolled myself with the grammar thing, I genuinely hadn't seen it and I do feel rather silly, HOWEVER this thread isn't a typical MSE thread and the OP has come in with a chip on their shoulder about how the forum is rubbish and they're leaving. Also, they didn't come straight in with a grammar attack, the post is 3 weeks old! The OP is long gone!

grammar trolling and use of past history to highlight negative points is absolutely a thing that happens, I'm not denying that, BUT its never the first point of call!
  • (I have myself pointed it out before, usually when someone has been uncomplimentary about the comprehensibility of an 'Indian call centre' etc. because I think its unnecessary to do so, and hypocritical when you struggle with your own first language, never mind a second one)

Personally I don't see anything wrong with complaining about call centre staff being hard to understand.
I can't speak Hindi or Urdu but then I'm not employed working in a call centre where my primary function is to converse with Hindi or Urdu speakers.

I'm not a great cook but if I ordered a rare steak in a restaurant and the chef sent me out a well done one, would I complain? (politely, but I would still ask for it to be changed).
Too right I would. As with call centre staff he or she would be getting paid to do a job and I would expect them to be able to do that job to a good standard.
