Not that expensive.
Cost more to have them registered.

Just on the wills thing. There are months when some law firms will do a free will provided it is simple. We did this a couple of years ago and it cost zero. I think March could be the time and usually it is mentioned on MSE.

Thank you:T.
I did ask them a while ago but they weren't interested:(. Quite a lot of the mountain I have are 'withdrawn' from libraries anyway and have already been sold on cheaply. They have the usual stickers and stamps. It wasn't that sort that I was offering them though.0 -

Thank you for the reminder of Free Wills Month:j:T
I saw details about this last year but typically didn't do anything about it:o. Now I'm more geared up to do it I'll make sure I take advantage of the offer next time I spot it. When I checked before they were asking for an 'optional' donation to selected charities. If they drew up a will for me I'd feel obliged to donate:o but it wouldn't worry me too much if the charities they were pushing were ones I'd feel happy to support anyway0 -

I'll investigate further when I have some time. Would be a good idea for both me and OH to sign up for something like that.
My friend's brother has dementia which seems to have progressed at a rapid rate and she is having a terrible time trying to deal with his financial affairs. A Power of Attorney would seem to be the solution but as I understand it he has to be willing to have it and sign. Best to get all that organised when people are mentally capable of doing it. I think people tend to leave things too late because they misguidedly think terrible things will never happen to them. Life's a lottery, there's nothing guaranteed is there?:eek:0 -

We set up a POA before there was a big hike in the price a couple of years ago (hubby was an accountant so always has his 'eye on the ball' financially). DD2 was 'given' this, so if we need it, it's all set up.
Better by far to organise well before it's required, though I'm not sure if it comes in the category of a 'treat' for yourself !!! It COULD !0 -
And, of course, you can arrange a POA, but it only becomes 'active' when you need to officially register it.NST March lion #8; NSD ; MFW9/3/23 Whoop Whoop!!!0

I know lots of people are more comfortable using lawyers for wills and power of attorneys. I just think it needs to more widely known that these things can be done without the expense of lawyers, just by doing a bit or research and applying what you learn. In the last few years I have organised, a will, three powers of attorney and then confirmation(probate) for my parents estate. I have no legal background but found the processes quite straightforward. When I took the confirmation to the court the clerk said I had done a better job than most of the solicitors. Probably because I took my time and made sure I followed all the guidelines. As I say it is entirely an individual preference but it is not always necessary to use lawyers if you are up to researching things for yourself.0

With the free Wills thing we didn’t donate anything upfront as we both have our chosen Charities we give to if and when we can. However, we have no children and no family as such we want to leave whatever we are left with when we die so have left any inheritance firstly for the care of our cats and then to charity. There could potentially be two wealthy cats with sitters lining up!
Joking apart do take advantage of the free Will service.
Also POA is worth considering as I understand you aren’t married? It could make things a lot easier for one of you in the event of something not necessarily life threatening but debilitating like a minor stroke where one party can’t sign properly. Please don’t think me a harbinger of doom - just treat it like insurance?
