I've got 11.5 coupons left and tomorrow I've got a morning killing time between the Post Office first thing and meeting a friend for lunch, so I'll be wandering round the big shopping centre.... and next Monday I'm spending the day in Shrewsbury with a friend...

Will the coupons reach New Year?!

Good luck Laura! Spending them isn't a bad thing, if you spend them on something that you really need/want and will use.

I couldn't find anything worth buying!!!

Either the clothes are getting much, much worse (quality, design, style) or I'm getting *much* more picky...

I walked home planning to excavate a grey fine-wool tailored jacket and skirt from aeons ago - I made the skirt, lined with pale-pink cheap synthetic lining fabric, part-made the jacket, then my Mum "helped" and put the sleeves on the wrong sides so their elbow curve goes backwards (she meant well...!) and all in all it ground to a halt...

I think I shall excavate it after Xmas, and decide on what colour to line in in, and get some really good silk online with the last of my points. Then I can dismantle the jacket pieces and press them under a damp cloth, and cut the new lining pieces and make the whole thing again from scratch, but with a beautiful silk lining and so on, skirt as well. Then I shall have a lovely comfortable skirt and jacket for occasional work wear, and it will be a Thing of Beauty :)

That's a much better use of my points! :)

Yes it is, and it does sound like it will be A Thing Of Beauty, as well as fabulous to wear.

Do you remember the Gotland sweater that I knit, playing yarn chicken to the end of the (probably too short) sleeves? The one which shed dye whenever you looked at it? Well, I hand-washed it today and it’s still shedding dye. It’s been worn and washed half a dozen times too!

After our conversation regarding Gotland’s capacity to felt, it’s on “Hand Wash Only” duty. (I dumped it in a bucket of warm water, together with a capful of W8rose’s Cashmere & Wool Wash, soaked it for 20 minutes then rinsed it out in cold water.)

  • One more declaration to make. I have cut out the pieces to make some pyjamas. I have used 2 metres of fabric which equates to 6 coupons. This takes my tally up to 47 coupons used leaving 19 coupons left to spend. I have Christmas off this year and I may spend it doing the things I enjoy which is gardening (may be a bit tricky this time of year) or sewing/knitting/crafting. I may still yet spend those coupons on more fabric and the like but I can't imagine spending that much. I know that for Christmas I am getting a dressmaker's dummy (everyone has clubbed together) and I can't wait. I'm bound to start making something to try it out. Maybe that pinafore I was talking about. Watch this space!

  • I bought a dress from M&S sale online and it was ok. It was a very good price and I do have the coupons to use for it, but this thread has taught me that just 'ok' is not good enough, so it is packaged up to be returned.
Thank you PipneyJane and Laura_Elsewhere for all the information and inspiration you have given this year It has made me realise that quality is better than quantity, to look more in charity shops and see how I can change items to make them better and to enjoy the clothes I have.
I don't post much but enjoy reading the thread and will join again next year.

    Happy Christmas!

  • Oooh! oooh! we're famous! PipneyJane, we're famous!

I was in the utterly brilliant Ewe & Ply today and was telling my friend how picky I am nowadays about buying yarn* and the woman at the till said that it was funny I should say that about the online group that tries to stick to the old wartime coupons because she had a customer the other week who was telling her all about it too!

    Word is spreading!

    * I need to work out the coupons, but I got a large ball of slow-colour-change in greens and greys and rusts like an autumn hillside and a medium ball of conifer-green. I think I may do simple striped socks, instead of the complex colourwork. Maybe Fibonacci stripes... and maybe longer in the leg...

They are brilliant in there https://eweandply.co.uk/

  • And to you too, Pip - thank you for inspiring this challenge and for making me view ‘fashion’ and clothes in a completely different way. I’m looking forward to continuing the challenge next year, and thanks to everyone in this friendly and supportive group.
