What a traumatic thing to happen, Laura Elsewhere. I'm glad though that you've all managed to come through it all, though.
    Sealed Pot Challenge no 035.
    Fashion on the Ration - 27.5/66 ( 5 - shoes, 1.5 - bra, 11.5 - 2 pairs of shoes and another bra, 5- t-shirt, 1.5 yet another bra!) 3 coupons swimming costume.
  • Mustard yellow? Surely that is more an autumn colour than a spring one?

Either way, I'm not wearing it either.

Bucking the trend, I bought from the CD a hand knitted slouch cardigan in a burnt gold mustard colour and I love it, but I'm seeing lots of pale yellows or daddy yellow and that's definitely not for my skin tone. I don't think I even know what tones suit me, I just know what colours I like. I'm generally not the one looking at me so what do I care LOL

Still awaiting click and collect notification on the jeans. I do have a shirt, dress and blouse too on the way from an eBay charity listing which I'm looking forward too as the photos looked lovely.

Starting work on a blanket cardigan this week since it's meant to rain, and will be attempting the knitted vest top again too

I can't think of many people who look good in mustard yellow. I think that any sort of yellow is quite difficult to wear.

Although I'm not over-fussy about my clothes, and it shows, as long as they are comfortable, I do try to coordinate colours a bit.

I do have a bright orange waterproof which does nothing for me, but it was in a sale for a ridiculous price many moons ago. It is also h u g e but I thought I could pile lots of clothes on underneath it, which indeed I can. I happened to be wearing it with a pair of shocking pink trousers (don't ask!) last week and met someone who remarked that if he'd known I was out and about he'd have worn his sunglasses, pouring rain or no pouring rain.

I think I have been expelled from the 'frump to fab' thread.

You always look utterly fab in here, monnagran! :)

I like the sound of your pink and orange combo, especially on a dismal grey rainy day - who wants navy-blue waterproofs when they can cheerfully brighten up the place?

  • Another "make do and mend" project on the horizon - I patiently waited years and years for Dad to decide his gorgeous Harris tweed jacket was looking a bit worn and he should get a new one, so I could inherit his old one; I think it was about twenty years I waited...

The tweed is in perfectly good shape after I attacked it with a steam iron and a damp cloth - but the lining in the sleeves is shredded so it is quite tricky to put on, and the lining in general is battered and scruffy, and both main pocket-linings have gone totally, so I have been trying to decide for a couple of years what colour to re-line it in - a friend was helping and we realised that the blue-grey has flecks of rust-orange and green, and that I have some second-hand curtains bought with an eye to using them as lining for something, in copper and dark green in a geometric sort-of-houndstooth-diamond design, which I think could really look good with Harris tweed - I think it would make an otherwise old-fashioned and deeply traditional jacket look much more interesting, a flash of copper and dark green when I unbutton it!
And of course re-lining it fully will make it easier to wear, so I'll wear it more, and it will extend the life of the jacket by some way...

But I have to actually DO it. Along with all the other projects, argh...

Aren't people just so HILARIOUS? ;)
I really don't get this attitude of 'different is wrong'. Wear whatever you jolly well please! If you like it, wear it. I don't get that it is OK to comment like this. Are you supposed to laugh? Imagine if we really DID have rationing - would it stop people saying things if they knew you couldn't buy anything else??

Your orange and pink combo would have cheered me up!

I also get cross about the notion that things should be 'flattering'. There seems to be an implication that female clothes should show the shape of the wearers body, so if you wear something loose it is not 'flattering' because the onlooker can't see your figure...

I may be called Vintagegal but I am not living in the 1950's!

    Rant over!

Can't wait to hear what you do with the jacket laura_elsewhere, what a treasure.

If you are interested in having your colours done, the best book I found back in the day was one called The Colour & Style File. (Link is to Amazon, where there is a secondhand copy for £0.01.)

Under that system, I'm a "bright dark". Later on, someone's MIL did a "colours party" and came up with a similar result. I have the swatches from that party.

Are you sure you weren't inspired by Michael Portillo? I love his rail journeys but his colour choices can be a bit clashing. I'm sure one of his jackets was made from London Underground train seat fabric (? Circle line).

Bright is always welcome on a gloomy day.

Good luck with relining it. As long as the fabric is intact near the seams of the lining, you should be able to unpick it and sketch a pattern out of it.

I have the same problem with the lining in my big Cossack coat. Replacement lining fabric has been in my stash for years - God knows where - but I don't think it's good enough. I may end up buying proper silk for it. (In the meantime, I'm ignoring that coat and wearing a puffer-coat instead when it's freezing.)

  • I did used to own a mustard yellow blouse about 25 years ago which I wore a lot but I had my colours done (I think I am a "cool winter") and realised it is not a colour that works with my skin. It does make me look a little unwell. I have got some mustard and black fabric (ITU fabric - I'm not sure what that is but it feels like a type of Jersey). I was thinking I should make some jeggings out of it as it would look fab with a black top (of which I have loads) and being that it would be on my bottom half it shouldn't make me look like I am poorly. I love colour but due to working in a rather dull office during the week I wear a lot of black. Perhaps I should liven it up a bit to cheer myself up.

Did anyone enjoy watching the Sewing Bee last night. Apparently next week's episode is about upcycling and using old scraps and second hand clothes. I am really interested to see what they do. This week they made use of old tents. That was quite interesting.

I'm impressed you are attempting to re-line a jacket. I would be scared to tackle that - I have never even made a jacket. I guess maybe I should try one to take me out of my comfort zone. My current project is a long sleeved top (of which I need some) made out of a chambray fabric. I cut the pattern out last night but am a bit unsure on the sizing. Its not a fitted top but my bust size on the pattern back means I should cut out a size 14 and my waist size says a size 16. I am an hour glass shape so I am not sure how that works. I wish I had a dressmakers dummy to put it up against to check it. Not very easy to check it on yourself. I'm sure I will manage eventually.
