Should shops not give you a receipt ?

A very popular shop I use (part of a chain) whenever you purchase something, the staff (all of them, all the time, so must be a management directive), ask you "do you want your receipt". I always say yes, but many say no and it is screwed up and binned.
I think this is wrong and they should always give you your receipt in case there is a problem (even though it is an eat-in and takeaway food shop) as I think it could be a way of wriggling you out of your rights should there be a problem.
Do you think a complaint is in order ?

If there was a problem with takeaway food you'd take it straight back.0

As many customers apparently don't want a receipt, the biggest improvement they could make would be to save on till rolls and only print one when requested.0

How would you phrase that complaint?0 -
There's no legal requirement to offer a receipt.0

What shop is this? Most tills these days give the option of a receipt being printed or not. AFAIK, there is no legal requirement for a shop to give out a receipt anyway and certainly no obligation for a customer to accept one.
Really.
A lot of shops tell you that your receipt is your guarantee.0 -
Not sure really, but that they could be could be seen as trying to limit peoples consumer rights by now automatically giving a receipt.
You're not limiting your consumer rights by not having a receipt. It might be useful evidence but it's not mandatory to produce one (or incontrovertible evidence that eg the item you're complaining about is the same one which the receipt refers to).0 -
