Should shops not give you a receipt ?

A very popular shop I use (part of a chain) whenever you purchase something, the staff (all of them, all the time, so must be a management directive), ask you "do you want your receipt". I always say yes, but many say no and it is screwed up and binned.

I think this is wrong and they should always give you your receipt in case there is a problem (even though it is an eat-in and takeaway food shop) as I think it could be a way of wriggling you out of your rights should there be a problem.

Do you think a complaint is in order ?

If there was a problem with takeaway food you'd take it straight back.
  • As many customers apparently don't want a receipt, the biggest improvement they could make would be to save on till rolls and only print one when requested.

How would you phrase that complaint?

There's no legal requirement to offer a receipt.

What shop is this? Most tills these days give the option of a receipt being printed or not. AFAIK, there is no legal requirement for a shop to give out a receipt anyway and certainly no obligation for a customer to accept one.

Not sure really, but that they could be could be seen as trying to limit peoples consumer rights by now automatically giving a receipt.

    Really.

A lot of shops tell you that your receipt is your guarantee.

They're giving the choice to the consumer, how can this be "limiting people's consumer rights". :rotfl:

You're not limiting your consumer rights by not having a receipt. It might be useful evidence but it's not mandatory to produce one (or incontrovertible evidence that eg the item you're complaining about is the same one which the receipt refers to).
