I'm currently rewatching Downton Abbey. I love it. The other night it was the death of Sybil, the younger daughter. I sobbed my socks off.
Absolutely love Downton"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

Good news about the medication humpty. That's a weight off your mind.:)
Sorry to hear you're full of aches and pains sugarbaby. It is hard to strike a balance between rest and exercise. I guess that using your cinema pass is a good compromise because it gets you out but then you can relax at the cinema.Absolutely love Downtonlessonlearned wrote: »Looking forward to the film.
I enjoyed the series but, for me, it's being repeated a bit too soon. I'm more inclined to watch things that were on so long ago that I've forgotten the plot lines. Last year I watched Bergerac. A period peace in itself.
ETA: Just thought LL, you can wear your new skirt with the Barbour when you go to Chatsworth!:D
We live a short distance from the real Downton Abbey. It's on my list of places to visit but since the film, opening hours are limited (lots of corporate events) and it's very heavily subscribed. I did some consultancy work nearby a while back and it was good to see the building from the outside on a regular basis. What always threw me watching the show was when Lord Grantham would say he was off to a meeting in Leeds for the afternoon which is a long way from Hampshire!:D Before it was famous for the house and grounds, it mainly offered an Egyptology exhibition. An earlier Caernarvon financed and accompanied Howard Carter when he 'discovered' Tutankhamun's tomb.
I've been enjoying more podasts/recordings on the BBC sounds app. Currently I'm listening to an old 'Book at Bedtime' from Radio 4. Today they've announced that a lot of unabridged books are to go on the app. from later this month. I enjoy listening when I'm pottering about the house as while I enjoy live radio there's too much drivel on there IMO.
We have the house to ourselves for the weekend. It's still a bit of a mess but I've kept the main rooms clear so we're comfortable. I need to nip to Sainsbury's briefly, pick up the floor covering for the bathroom and take some more stuff to the CS. Then I'll be listening to the radio. First weekend of the football season for us and an away game to start. Maybe that's why it feels like autumn here! :eek:0 -
I bought three new dresses in the Debenhams sale. A navy blue flared one, a black and white spotty one and a plain black one, all quite short in length.
I had to spend £1 more to get free delivery so I bought some silver hoop earrings.
My bloody cat keeps going in my wardrobe and sitting on my shoes so yesterday I swapped wardrobes with my husband. He has way more clothes than me anyway and my old wardrobe is twice the size!
Everything looks so neat in the other wardrobe. I have also ordered a shoe rack arriving today.
I did some decluttering while we were moving things around and I asked my husband why he never uses the hair gel I bought him. I put some on for him and his hair looked a lot better so I thought I would start using it too. I put it in the bathroom so we can both use it.:Dlessonlearned wrote: »
He said it was postural and asked how much time I was spending on computers, how much typing etc. I said I was using an IPad and he said "there's your problem". I have heard of Ipad neck and problems with overuse of mobile phones so he could well be right.
So.....I think from now on I will be restricting my time on MSE and the length of my posts. See if there's any improvement. It's not that I don't love you all......:rotfl: but anything is worth a try.
I started getting the most blinding pain in my neck a few years ago and I realised it was from my then new laptop.
I looked online at the correct posture and you had to have your eyes at a certain level. I had to look around my house for a box exactly the right height to put the laptop on. It did work.:)0 -
Hello lovely ladies.
Just a quickie.
:rotfl: me in a tweed skirt and Barbour to visit Chatsworth. Very Dowager Duchess. .....
Wednesday I think I might invest a laptop and just keep the iPad for shopping and trips away. Ideal for holidays.
Well today's the day. Don't feel too bad so far, had a bad night so tired with a headache. Just feel a bit fragile but will keep busy. Family meal tonight.
Builder is supposed to be dropping by at some point.
Very windy here and we are scheduled some downpours.0 -

Good evening lovely ladies.
Thank you for your kind thoughts and good wishes. It's been a bit of a rollercoaster day.
Tbh I nearly cancelled going out with my family because after the builder being here and all the disruption and my lack of sleep from last night I felt quite ill at one point. But I knew they would be upset if I cancelled so I went to bed for an hour around 3 ish and managed an hours sleep and felt a bit better.
We had a nice time, first at a wine bar where my grandson could join in and then I took the two sisters, the boyfriend and FIL to an Irish pub where they were playing live traditional Irish music with a few Beatles numbers thrown in for good measure. Both venues were new to me but they very nice and we had a pleasant evening. And of course we raised a glass to himself.
I am very tired now though and feel quite drained. My neck is really painful so I think I'll just have a quiet day. I need to pop out to Aldi for a few bits. The house is a bit upside down after the builder being here but it can wait till Monday.
Been a bit of a funny day foodwise. I have grazed rather than had proper meals. I never feel quite "right" if I eat that way - probably too many carbs so tomorrow I will be glad to just potter and cook something nice and healthy.
Very chilly here tonight, it has felt quite autumnal today.
Ps. In the Irish pub there were quite a few examples of "mutton". The two sisters and boyfriend commented so I taught them the mutton phrase. They were really tickled with that one.
They are all very keen to be really fluent in English and they are always fascinated by our sayings .......tonight's new words were "loo" and a discussion about other words such as toilet, bathroom, lavatory and a few less polite ones, and then a couple of sayings, the mutton one of course and when discussing the Yes Man book and film and the power of positive thinking I threw in "Every cloud has a silver lining".
So they wanted to know if there was a silver lining to my husband's death.......the questions young people ask. Lol
I said yes of course, in fact there are two.
The first ........he is free at last, no longer a captive in his own body, no longer paralysed, no longer suffering, his spirit set free to soar. . They nodded sagely. And then wanted to know the second silver lining ......I smiled "Oh that's easy, I never have to watch football again"......

Good morning lovely ladies.
Time to reflect a little.
5 years of widowhood under my belt. I feel I have come a long way during this fifth year, finally shaking off the inertia and coming out of the shadows. This thread and the champagne one, and the friendship and support of everyone has helped me more than I can say. So a big thank you to you all.
So what have I achieved......
I moved house and have made a good start on the renovations. I am slowly turning a neglected house into a comfortable and (hopefully) elegant home, one which will meet my changing needs so that I can age in situ should I wish to.
Although I still think I might move again...... you know me, wanderlust can strike at any time.....
I have managed to lose almost three stones. Feel tons better and frankly I look heaps better. Still got a little bit further to go and then I really want to try and improve my fitness. Need to work on pain relief, strength, stamina and flexibility so that I can remain mobile and independent. And of course I'm vain enough to want to continue to look as good as I can. Maybe not hold back the years exactly but certainly try and slow the ravages of time. :rotfl:
I have even managed to kickstart my social life again, joining several different meet up groups. It meant forcing myself at times but I had to bite the bullet. Not always easy but worth the effort. I am making new friends and building up a nice social circle, whilst not forgetting my old friends too, reengaging with some I haven't seen for a while.
The plan now is to build on these foundations......continue to say "yes" to life and to adventure. It's what he would want for me.
Si a todo.
I have learned that you never get over the death of a partner but you can learn to live with that loss. It just takes time and patience.0 -

That made me laugh out loud.:rotfl:
I think it demonstrates just how far you've come. I'm not trying to make light of how you feel, especially this week, but you've made so much progress particularly in the past year. :T
The night at the Irish pub sounds great. We went to Dublin for a city break a couple of years ago and I just loved it in the pubs in Temple Bar, touristy but fun. I don't know if it's the Celt in me but I really enjoy the music and it gets my feet tapping too.
It's interesting how some women translate how to dress for a Saturday night out. I think sometimes it can be 'cultural' as well as age related. I remember being in a pub in the South Wales valleys a few years back. It was a Saturday night and they had live music. Even now, many rural Welsh pubs are mainly frequented by men but Saturday night is a special occasion so the women get taken out. The uniform seemed to be black trousers and a sparkly top and then to sit with the other women while the men propped up the bar.:(
I think it's probably changing as younger people get influenced by Instagram and the like but I know the life I live is very different from many other women. And it's definitely not just age as I know of younger women who, as an example, wait on their partners hand and foot.
I meant to say that I loved the sound of your bright trousers Maddie. For the typical British summer weather, something cheerful like that is perfect.
At the moment it's dry and brightish here so I've put a load of washing out. I'm trying to keep it down as I don't know when we'll have water during the week. To be fair, the plumber only turns it off when it's essential but it's unpredictable.
My fabbing is minimal at the moment as without the bathroom I don't really have space to have all the products easily to hand. It rather concentrates the mind as to what's essential. Other than the obvious of keeping clean I've found I always use my moisturiser and eye cream and then hand cream after I've been doing any messy jobs (like wiping away endless dust). That's for home and then when I've been out I must have mascara and a bit of lippy. What would be your must haves?
Another pottering day today. I took a bag to the CS yesterday so hopefully I can fill another today. It's really therapeutic.:)0
