Phone Gb help

Hi,
wondered if I could get some help please?
Never had a smartphone before so very little idea of how much storage I should get(I know, as much that the budget buys:)..

I've found some data calculators(and estimated how much I might use) and I realise the more storage the better but as I've never had or used this before, I'm a little stumped.

I'm not a gamer, I do love my iTunes (but still use my ipod at present) and will want some apps but as to numbers, at this point -who knows.
I work full time and drive most places so don't see me having a huge amount of time to utilise and store videos etc. But again, this could all change when I get what I've never had:)

Any and all help would be very greatly received, thanks.

Buy a phone that can use micro SD storage - that rules out ithingys - then it is expandable and cuts down on the amount of on board storage that is actually needed. A branded 64GB card costs from around £10, way less than the difference in price between internal only storage phones.
  • thanks for you reply but I'm looking to get an iPhone but thanks you for your input.
  • I have a 64GB iPhone SE that I’ve had for over 2 years. I’ve used 22GB of the storage. The biggest eater of storage is video, recording 4K video and leaving it on your phone will zap your storage in no time. I have street level maps of the UK, Spain and Portugal with the free “Maps.me” app on my phone, using 2GB, and just under 2GB of podcasts. The rest is taken up with apps and the operating system. My guess is that except for video enthusiasts, you could manage with 32GB or perhaps 64GB to leave some headroom.

By comparison, I have around 1000 MP3 music tracks stored on an 8GB SD card in the car music system. I don’t know what storage space iTunes needs as I don’t use it.

Be prepared to get robbed for a bigger storage then. That's the main reason why iPhones don't have memory card slots.

How can I recommend if I don't know what you need and why you decided to buy iPhone?

My personal current requirements for a recent Android are

    3Gb memory (RAM),
    32Gb storage (+memory card)

    - and this is overkill.

The smaller size, the better. You can get this for £100-£150 (Huawei, Xiaomy, possibly Motorola). 128Gb card can be added for ~£15 IF you need it (out of curiosity check the difference in price between the same iPhones with 32Gb and 128Gb storage).

I like 2 SIMs, but this is not what everyone needs. My recent new Xiaomi cost me less than £100 and it has all the above + a fingerprint sensor. I'd like to have a phone with cordless charging but am not prepared to pay a high premium for it yet.

Both my SD's have 32 gb iphones and store that many pictures (because they 'need to look at them all the time') and are running out of space, even filling the free icloud allowance.
My android has 32 gb and I've used 24gb, but do use an SD card for pics/videos etc.
Your use would suggest 64gb would be enough - with Apple, you pay quite a premium for more storage. My personal preference is Android, and it is certainly cheap to add memory via an SD card.
It seems that many/most people either prefer apple or android and rarely change once they've decided. However, as your first smartphone, either try some friends out, or go for a mid range android. Apple are a premium product and priced accordingly. Many of the current mid range android phones offer the same functionality for less - you might avoid an expensive error!
  • flashg67-thank you so much for you reply, that has been very helpful and I appreciate that.
This has stumped me really, as I have no previous usage, storage etc to compare to , to know what I will need. It does make sense going in at a lower end before I commit and/or make a costly mistake (iPhone aren't cheap, I know:)
    Thanks again Flash.

From what I can see this would be your most important point to consider.

Are you looking at taking your entire iTunes library with you? If so how big is it?

Allowing for growth I would look for at least double your library size. This is where Android has the advantage over an iPhone (discounting the possible huge price differential) as with a micro SD card slot you can expand if needed in the future or even carry multiple cards with you.
