Gift card & part payment at Next

Hello MSE’s,

Yesterday evening I did the dreaded next sale (never again) I had £30 in Next gift cards and I spent just over £70 using cash for the remaining balance. Not that it makes much difference but I used my vouchers to purchase clothing for myself and I bought my husband some jumpers at his request!
2 of the jumpers I purchased for him didn’t fit, and a ring I purchased was faulty, so I went to return them. I was told they could go back into a gift card and not a cash refund. Taking into account I had used £40 of my husbands cash to purchase his jumpers and the refund total came to £34.50 the sales assistant was adamant she could not refund me the cash and could only issue a gift card. If I was returning more I could understand doing a part gift card part cash refund but this didn’t make sense. I argued it until I was blue in the face and her manager came over and sorted it without quibbling. As far as I was concerned I had spent £30 in gift cards and £40 odd in cash and as I was returning 34.50 I was entitled to that in cash but she was absolutely adamant that was not the case. Can anyone advise what are my rights in this case?

I know technically I won because I did get my cash refund but I don’t want anyone else to be done over my next’s policies (or their rogue till assistant!)

You were entitled to £30 in gift cards and £4.50 in cash, that's if they allow cash refunds for change of mind returns, if they don't then you were only entitled to the gift cards and no cash if that's what their returns policy states.

If they didn't offer a change of mind returns policy at all you would have been entitked to a gift card to the value of the faulty item only.

It is standard practice throughout the retail world to always refund gift voucher first.

This is more a case of a till assistant and shop being done over by a rogue customer than you being done over by Next or the till assistant.
  • What makes you think you're entitled to the cash, rather than a gift card?

Indeed, the same would be true if the purchase had been made partly by credit or debit card. Cash is the last payment method to be refunded.

The obvious workaround to this is to always pay with one payment method..

That's simply because they wanted swiftly rid of you.
There was no "rogue" till operative, just a problem customer, you I'm afraid :(
  • Ah I forget how wonderful you all were. Glad to be a problem

I'm certain that's what the manager in Next thinks when he or she has to deal with such a"problem" on a regular basis.

The "rogue" till assistant will be equally peeved that her manager has contradicted her correct communication of her company's refund procedure.

No one was "done over", you received a goodwill refund that had nothing whatever to do with your rights as a consumer.

Do you want the correct answer or just what you want to hear?
  • I have to deal with people like OP on a daily basis. Luckily I’m in a managerial position so I have no problems telling poeple like this to ‘jog on’.

The secret is two separate transactions.

Use vouchers for the stuff you know you will keep, and cash for anything else...

(Obviously depending on their refund policy for change of mind)
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I must say that I agree. A polite and non complaining customer in this instance looks like they'd have been told the correct thing and no cash refund, whilst another who "argues until they're blue in the face" is able to steamroll their way to a refund. As others said, the "rogue till assistant" was right.

It shouldnt be like that though.

the OP was told the correct info and the manager should have backed up the assistant

Of course in a busy shop with a complaining customer , the manager chose the easy option
