Hello Everyone,
On Christmas Eve my Sky HQ box gave up the ghost! Tried all the tricks to get it back working and none of them worked it is stuck in standy amber light. Won't switch on, tried wiping all the contents etc.
So I guess it is time to get Sky Q, I am one of Sky's Diamond (Black) customers as I have been with them over 15 years.
My current deal is the Movies Pack, HD add on, plus a legacy Sky Sports F1 as it was included when you had either the Movies pack or the Sports Pack along with the HD add on. I believe that has all changed now. I also have all the documentaries which I like.
What I am after is advice I only really want sky for Sky Sports F1 plus the documenatries, I am thinking Netflix may be better for movies, so I am considering dropping the Movies pack which means I will lose Sky Sports F1.
My question is what is the most cost effective way to do this? Sky are offering me a Sky Q 2TB box for £20 install, but they want an extra £12 per month for 18 months I guess that is to pay for the box.
any advice greatly appreciated,
SDM197.

No the £12 extra per month ongoing is for the 2TB box (usually 1TB and no UHD), a Sky mini and UHD, you don't own Sky Q equipment Sky loan it to you.

If it's the same as I have you are not quite right - and it may be of significance.
I've never had films or sports channels, but I get SKY F1 HD because I was one of the original HD Subscribers at £10 a month on top of the family pack - and SKYF1 HD came free with that, and still does for me.0 -

Sky now offer F1 as a separate package after they realised how much money they were losing by having it bundled in with sports at an obscene amount of money a month where people only wanted F1 but were unwilling to pay the full sports package price. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. We were on the same legacy deal, but they won't keep you on it, if you want to change your package in any way. We decided to do away with it, and save money with a new contract. Will have to make do with C4 Highlights!!How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -

Nah, just get another Sky HD+ box locally through Gumtree for <£20. Plug it all in including your card, and that's it. Or maybe your Hard Drive in the broken box is still good - swap it over, to keep your recordings. This will cost less than a month's Sky Q sub!
I'm also clinging onto the F1 channel on an old package!0 -

I'd also be very wary of anything electrical offered for less than £20 or, as now seems inevitable, for more than it was originally retailed at...0 -
Now that the Sky+HD is no longer supplied by Sky (or even manufactured) the availability of these decoders will become increasingly limited.

What? I think you're getting ahead of yourself. These boxes are cheap because of supply and demand. There are masses out there, and they were often being upgraded (to 2TB boxes, say) or supplied and not needed. They're worthless (well, ~£20) without a card. Now that people are upgrading to Sky Q, there really is a glut of perfectly good HD+ boxes out there. They'll be around and perfectly safe for years to come. If you don't believe me, have a look at all the Sky *SD* Recorders that are still available on your local Gumtree!0 -
Amazon third Party sellers are currently offering 2TB Sky+HD decoders for more than Sky originally sold them for.
I agree those sellers may be getting "ahead of themselves"
Gumtree not relevant (to me, anyhow, because I'd never accept pre-owned electricals )0 -

Seems paranoid to me, and plays into Sky's hands wanting to upgrade people to more expensive things, that they don't need. They've been giving out 'refurbished' HD+ boxes for years to replace faulty ones BTW.0 -

I was talking about old second hand decoders being sold on Gumtree by strangers, not professionally re-conditioned decoders provided by Sky!
I'm not being forced to "upgrade" by Sky either.0
