  • The Police probably could find them, but might also find they are a member of some protected community or other, so not be willing to do anything as daft as, oh I don't know, upholding the law....

I already know the police wont do anything so I hired a private investigator and a SIA licensed bodyguard to assist.

    Why the bodyguard?

If he paid the individual partly by credit card, would he be able to get his money back from the bank?

    Irrelevant - he didn't.

They used a genuine v5c serial number which matches a genuine number plate of a cloned car.

But the document reference and keeper details are fake meaning you cannot claim title.
The document reference is very easy to validate.
https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ and click on "view tax rates". Unless you put in the docref from the most recently issued V5C, it won't show you.

I've sold a few cars before years back where someone bought cash to my house and we are talking around £40k, but I took it to the bank with the guy where it was properly counted and verified before he took the car away. Happy ending.]
I'm guessing that must have been over a decade ago because you'd have a bit of difficulty paying in that amount of cash nowadays due to money laundering regulations.
If you haven't already given your address to the scammer, I would suggest you try and keep it as secret as possible. You live in a big town but have already narrowed it down to a few thousand possible properties.

No problems at all cashing it in, I had my passport and he had his driving license, we showed the v5c and they were happy. Obviously stunned due to amount of the cash. Scammer doesn't have my address.

I have removed that statement about my location thanks
  • Why the bodyguard?

Investigator was scared as it's a large criminal ring of fraudsters and they may be armed. Once he has been found and evidence collected, I will also be making my way to Manchester.
  • I suggest that once you have some evidence, you leave it to the police. No point endangering your own safety on top of your monetary loss. If you're correct about it being a large criminal ring then one PI, a security guard and you are not going to intimidate them into handing you your money.
  • Just a thought. That ebay account has some purchase history. I wonder if you could contact the people that sold them things, tell them the story and see if they will release any contact information off the record. Worth a try. Might lead to another address.

I suspect {Edited by Forum Team} eBay account has been hacked. The other sales give the location as Lytham st Anne's.
