So protection was in place on 23/12/18. But due to Christmas period HPICHECK is closed so I can't start a claim yet till 27th December.
Will something like this be covered?[/QUOTE]
I'm not sure but I thought I had read on a recent thread that cloned cars were excluded from cover?
I’d imagine so. They’ve answered the question “Is car XXX ok?”, but the OP has actually bought car YYY masquerading as XXX. I don’t see how they can guarantee that.0 -
In the HPI terms :
“The HPI Guarantee will not cover any losses arising due to a “cloned” vehicle to the extent that any part of the purchase price (including but not limited to any deposit, holding fee or other part-payment) for the vehicle is paid in cash other by any other payment mechanism other than via the banking system. We recommend that all vehicles are paid via the banking system – such as cheque or a bankers draft. For the purpose of this clause a “cloned” vehicle is one that has been stolen, and given a false identity, normally that of an identical vehicle.”0 -

Exactly. If the cloned reg and VIN match a HPI check isn't at fault.
Forgive my ignorance, but how do you check the true VIN? Is it stored on the ECU or summat?0 -

Thanks. So that means the 20k cash is not covered? The bank transfer of 9.7k is part of "the banking system" but is not specifically mentioned in the T&Cs (only cheque or banker's draft)?
EDIT: Actually that term seems to say nothing is guaranteed if any part of the purchase price is paid outside the banking system (ie cash)/0 -

If I'd lost £30k to someone like that I'd set up an account, win an auction and go round to collect my win with an unsavoury character who charges a fee for sorting people out and make sure that I walked away with my £30k and they ended up in hospital. In most large urban areas you can find such people who would do that for a few hundred quid. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. You forgot to mention that if you were to do that, there is a possibility that you would end up with a criminal record for assault/ABH/GBH and demanding money with menaces (or whatever the legal term is for this) and possibly a bit of jail time as well.
Even though you may well be in the right morally, the law wouldn't care about that.
There's also the possibility that if this seller/scammer does this on a regular basis and are part of an organised gang, they also know a few hard nuts who would would do the same to you or your family for a few £s0 -

Do you think the seller would report it to the police?0 -

Why not?
If the selling of the cloned car has already been reported to the police then the seller hasn't really got anything further to lose by reporting the fact that someone is threatening them or has already assaulted them and they have plenty to gain if it means that the OP gets locked up as it may prevent or delay any legal action taken by them or it may stop the seller from getting forced to hand £30,000 over.
If the seller is claiming that they were an innocent seller of the car and they knew nothing of the cloning, it would simply raise suspicion if they didn't report any unlawful actions by the OP.0 -

If I got my £30k back I'd laugh my way all the way to court.0
