watching FreeView - not a single sporting channel

Options
We have been thinking of ditching our Virgin Media digital package and switching to Freeview. So being away for Christmas in rented accommodation where FreeView s only TV option, seemed good opportunity to trial it.

OH cannot believe it, he is sitting in front of TV, beer in hand, on Xmas Eve, and not even one single sporting channel is showing on Freeview. Is this typical?

yes, I don't think there are any free sports channels.

    have a look at https://www.nowtv.com
and see if that would help at home

    All channels available on Freeview are listed here;
    https://www.radioandtelly.co.uk/freeview.html

There is no dedicated Sports channel, but the BBC, ITV and CH4 all show various sports as part of their normal broadcast line-up..

If you want Sport on Xmas Eve go to the Pub or pay Sky...
  • If you get a Freesat box and a dish you can get a couple of sports channels

A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

Pretty rubbish content on those channels though.
Hardly worth the outlay for Freesat.
Different if the OP was a Sky subscriber looking to cancel because their existing Sky+HD equipment would receive many Freesat Channels without additional cost...
  • Is this typical of what? Freeview? Then yes.

There's a clue in the name if you're aware of just how much Sky and BT pay for football, boxing etc.

Take 5 minutes to think about how much sports are charging for their TV rights. That's why your TV channels cost so much and there's so little sport on Freeview. Then again many of us are grateful for that fact.

Freesports https://www.freesports.tv/ is on Freeview CH64 if you are in suitable coverage area and have suitable equipment. ITV4 and Quest occasionally show sports.

AS above channel 64 Free Sports an offshoot of Premier Sports does show sports .
You may need to retune to get ch 64 and needs good reception .

BBC ITV Ch 4 and Ch 5 have sports .

But a dedicated UK sports channel is a paid for service .

However sports covers many sports from football to snowboarding all depends upon what the user wants .

Not much live sport on XMass eve anyway .

unfortunately Freeview Sports channel 64 not available in our area. I was not expecting live premium sport but did think there might be some repeats of some "classic" matches/races etc where maybe we missed one or two the first time round.

You need to realise that the rights to such repeats are also too expensive for Freeview and largely reside with the Clubs themselves and with Sky.

No chance of them ever being on a Freeview channel.

Why do you think so many people actually have PayTV?

If you want soccer and recent films you have to pay.

Channel 64 is currently showing snowboarding, hardly a very mainstream sport, so you're not missing much.
