One question though now that i have chosen a broker if i want to create a HYP do I have to specifically say so, or can i just choose shares in companies that have high yeilding dividends and then create my own portfolio? ;)

No you don't have to tell the broker anything, just buy the shares.

If/when you have picked your HYP shares though, suggest you post the portfolio over on the Fool board for comment. They are very nice helpful posters there, and will set you straight if you're off the track and suggest any way to improve it, if appropriate. No need to be scared, there are newbies there all the time :)

Does anyone out there know the inside story to Seat Pagine Gialle? The obvious info is that it is a mega-sized publisher of yellow-pages-type directories based in Italy, but something nasty must of happened in the dim and distant .. cos the turnover is huge but the profits teenie. Dark thoughts say the mafia is taking a slice, but seriously they bought out Thomsons not so long ago and have just hired a big exec from Talk-Talk. So what's going on? All seems a mystery to me - but maybe you someone has the answers ...

HYP is just one style of investing - value investing, more relavent to the aftermath of the 2000 share slump. There are other strategies, investing for growth for instance, or a combination of value and growth investing. Take care about TMF, their favoured investment strategies only give part of the picture.

For a small investor investing in funds is less risky than shares because its an effective way to diversify your holdings and avoid losses caused by the failure or bad times suffered by individual companies in what must be a small portfolio. Funds buy large numbers of individual shares in bulk, thus diminishing risk, which is something a small investor can't do cost effectively.

Qinetic is formed from the remnants of the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) and various other ex MOD/Ministry of Technology/MOA etc. They have many valuable revolutionary inventions over the years but its hard to say if this will continue in the strictures of private ownership. IMO its probably going to force the share price up pretty fast initially because governments always seem to sell things off like this too cheap.

This is not advice - hopefully it's common sense..
