Energy. The UK is already a net importer. So there will be investment in alternative sources. Time to get in on the ground floor.0 -
If we are going to have the Olympic Torch then why not the Olympic fire extinguisher in some of our more unstable boroughs?
Microwave based 'active denial systems' are a sure fire investment technology.

Excellent ideas guys. Fire control very important as we've seen and forest fires are a danger in lots of countries
A simple idea and its so overlooked its silly is water. This is not my idea, I heard it pointed out. Just look back to growing USA when they were rich in the 50's and 60's water and infrastructure was a big deal towards that growth.
People means water, when they get rich its how you make profits from them
Its like the ultimate free thing, water is everywhere but its also a kind of luxury especially in an expanding society and growing towns. Very hard to think how best to invest in something free, challenging. I like engineering and I own a consultancy with water experience, HYC
Im not sure owning a UK utility would do, thats more related to essentials then growth. So I'd be looking at some sort of technology and/or expertise3D printing? http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b012r7ty Not sure about it myself, but the presenter sounded very enthusiastic. "A revolution in the way things are made," I think he said.
Nope, the presenter is right. This is revolutionary. Again how can the money be made best, but it is very big how they can make objects right in your front room.0 -
Thrugelmir for alternative energy sources take a look at Oxford Catalysts (OCG), a favourite of the traders own community. This firm has a gas to liquid fuel reactor, which is small enough to be economic in small situations, of which there are countless; oil rigs, oil burnoffs on land, basically many small sources of gas that is currently wasted. The output is a synthetic fuel similar to petrol or diesel.0

FYI if you want to test your stockpicking skills, Traders Own are running a free to enter stockpicking competition where entries close this evening. You'll need to register to enter.
You pick 3 stocks, post them onto the thread (link here) and then Traders Own add your entries to a live competition table. There are cash and equity unit (shares in Traders Own Plc) prizes.0 -
It's a shame that this thread has never really tried to address the subject promised by its title. No beginner would be any wiser about how to think about buying and trading shares after reading through this lot.
Can you recommend a book to cover the basics. I'm thinking about buying some of these.
[/LIST]Anybody like or dislike any of these, or have another book they'd recommend instead?
I can thoroughly recommend The Naked Trader. It was recommended to me by a friend in University and having read it a number of times now, it's a fantastic overview in share dealing and picking stocks.
Though thanks for recommending the FT's Guide to Investing. I may have to pick that up.0 -
Nice review, very interesting for a french guy like me !0

Hi everyone, I'm new to this. My grandad bought me utility shares many years ago and I've got the dividend money to reinvest. I bought Wetherspoons because I like them :-) I've been thinking about Poundland shares, the shop is always rammed and they seem to be building more shops all the time. A friend said that they are limited in growth because of the £1 though, they haven't really got anywhere to go - what do you think?
Or how about something like Glasses Direct (I don't think you can buy shares in them though there might be something similar)0
