BT Billing Increase During Contract

I agreed a contract with BT for my broadband package on a 24 month contract at £35 / month back in November/December 2016. Slowly, and incrementally, every month, that £35 has steadily increased to over £50 per month.
Can they do this? Surely its a contract at £35 / month for 24 months?
I have now had my first bill post this contract and its now £70 / month! BT are so devious.... no reminder about new price, just take the higher amount of money for exactly the same service, no questions asked!

Can anyone help with how to tackle BT? can i get money back for the last 2 years overpayment?

Your contract price can be increased whenever BT want to. But they would have notified you and allowed you to leave without exit fees if the increase had caused you any financial detriment.
It is clearly referenced in their Terms and Conditions.

Just one example of the increase and advice from June 2018 https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2018/06/BT-to-hike-prices-in-September-heres-what-we-know-so-far/

So you have knowingly accepted the increases by not leaving so you have no financial lose.

As for the removal of the discounts after 2 years so you now pay the market rate, BT don't have to inform you at the end of the contract. They would have told you at start.

So now is the time to look for a new deal either at BT or elsewhere.
  • great - thanks for your help. So basically BT can do what they want within the contract! whats the point of being in contract!?
... time to look elsewhere - but i guess they can all do it!? What a crooked business this is...

BT didn't break the terms of the contract. If you don't want to leave fro no penalty when informed of price rises that is on you. The price rises when minimum terms are over are clearly stated when you sign up. It is up to you to be aware to what you signed up to and when any deals finish.

Like all ISPs, BT will have notified you of the post-discount price when you took out the contract.

Been two BT price rises since Nov 2016 .
Each with the ability to get out FOC or negotiate a discount .

If its increased bit by bit monthly suggests something wrong .It should have been two price rises within the 24 months and revert to standard charge month 25 again as per terms and conditions .

As said your contract included the term we may raise prices at any time .
Same on all BT adverts ec.

I doubt it increased every month, just a couple of times over the period as allowed in the contract. BT as usual are behind the curve here with many suppliers guaranteeing no increase during the contracted period. Move elsewhere is the way to vote, I am currently paying £27 between my 37 meg fibre and 2 unlimited minutes SIM only mobile contracts so no need for landline calls.

When you took out your contract it was available to you to write down the end date or put it in some electronic calendar. If you had omitted to do this you could ring BT or use their online /chat to find the same info. and then write it down. BT and others may be devious but surely you have some responsibility yourself?
