I need to sell some shares. I have the certificate and want to sell ASAP.

I had a lok at Selftrade, and though they are cheap at £12.50 I have to send them my certificate for them to enter it into their system before I can sell. This takes up to 7-10 days.

For me this is too long. If I do it via Lloyds TSB I get charged £27.50, but I can trade it immediately.

Can anyone advise as to whether this is true and whether Lloyds TSB is the cheapest to go for?

    Thanks.
  • do you want the trade to take pace immediately or the settlement to be immediate?

I am guessing at what you mean, but I want the trade to take place immediately - i.e. the shares to be sold at the price right then and there. The settlement i.e. money to be transfered to my account at a later date.

    Is that what you mean?

Lloyds TSB do this, but Selftrade cannot trade the shares immediately.
  • yes that is what I mean. many brokers will do it for you, as will all high street banks. I would have concerns about dealing through Selftrade... doesnt sound very efficient to me.

without reading into the article, the MSE share trading article outlines this "Online: The cheapest for almost everyone is Hoodless Brennan (http://www.hoodlessbrennan.com/). It has the lowest flat-fee commission charge on the market - just £7 to buy or sell stock - and there’s no management fee. Thus the total transaction cost is just £14 per stock, regardless of the deal size. However, this is an online only dealing service."

Normally all brokers operate the way you are looking to trade.

I like trading in certificated form rather than nominee accounts and for many years have used Direct Sharedeal in Glasgow, never having any problems. The trade is done instantly on the telephone and for a £1000 trade the costs are around £20.
  • yes can highly recommend direct sharedeal also in terms of operational efficiency, performance, professionalism etc. No idea how commissions compare for private trades however as ive only dealt with them on behalf of clients.

£20 seems rather expensive for £1000 even for a certified trade. a few months ago I bought 3k of stock via company XXXX and costs were circa £30. - reason I am not naming the company is I recently sold stock through them as you will see in this tread (post #79) I am less than satisfied!

  • A friend of my mothers (86 years old) has recently been involved in changes in his shares with Severn Trent. At the same time he was written to by a company named Price Stone Group who basically were writing to him to ask if he was aware that Severn Trent Shares could have been undervalued or overlooked (I think this was the term they used). They said that they had recently done research and could send him a report without any obligation. He filled out the enclosed form and received the report, which did not even mention anything at all about Severn Trent. He has also received telephone calls from them and he said that when he said he didn't want to get involved they said something to the effect of 'but you are involved' in a rather rude manner! My mother has told me that he has been extremely worried about this and the situation is aggravated by the fact that he is very hard of hearing and cannot always fully understand what is being said to him on the phone. I have looked on the internet today and found some rather alarming comments there about this company. Can anyone give me any further information about this company and any advice to give to my mother's friend?

    Thanks
