The other way is instead of placing an order "at market" (to buy at that moment at the best available price) is to use a limit order. E.g. you place a limit order to buy 1000 shares of XYZ at £1.00. This type of order would only be filled if the shares become available at £1.00 or less. You can often set a time limit on these - e.g for that day only or for some point in the future. I tend to use limit orders more now, as it gives you more control.
I'd agree with that, I use iii for my ISA, and will only ever place Limit orders with them, I think market orders through a broker who does not provide you with live streaming prices leaves you open to being screwed over for quite a lot of slippage.

Why don't you tell the broker how many shares you want to buy? That is the way the broker has to execute the order with the market makers. The broker shouldn't take responsibility for taking an order to buy a certain amount of £'s worth. I know it's done, but it isn't the correct procedure.

Buying funds in £'s worth is acceptable and normally traded that way, but not individual shares or corporate bonds.

I wanted to calculate what % shares would need to raise if I had £1k to make a profit.

However as I was quite bored last night I made a spreadsheet to tell me how to do so, it calculated how many shares X can make after comission and stamp duty and then what %, and the price, at which the shares need to be to be in profit :)

Another useful tool ive found for this is "Profit Point" option on Interactive Investor. Select your share then on the Tab options you see profit point and it allows you to input buy price and calculates at what point buying/selling you make profit. Of course if dealing outside iii then change commsion as required. Possibly another tool to consider..:rotfl:QUOTE]

Buying shares in £s is very common. On all online brokers' sites that I've ever seen you need to select to buy (or sell) a number of shares or to spend (or raise) a sum of money, they are quite used to it.

In fact, if you have a fixed limit, it's the only way to buy, since you will never know until the deal is placed the exact buying price per share (it will almost certainly not be the same as any buying price you see quoted on a website, as the dealer will get the best available price at that moment in time).

Wrong - it may be done but not common. Too much risk for the broker unless he confirms with you the number of shares you want to buy and at what price. He couldn't possibly accept a market order without knowing the number of shares you want. An institutional order can move a thinly traded equity quite a lot just as he is putting in his order.

    Funds are a different story.

Interesting to know, from a curiosity point. I have always dealt with online brokers and margin accounts, as prudryden points out, there is a specific agreement between you and your broker for the advancement of funds on margin, and a corresponding interest charge for those funds. The only exception to that being iii for an ISA, but since I top it up in full on April 6th and thus can't add anything to it, then I can only buy with what is in the account.

When dealing with HL there is also a specific agreement ( like many of these things, it is contained in the T&Cs ), namely that you make payment by the settlement date.

You obviously don't trade shares often.

The website (or, if on the phone, the dealer) is quite capable of dealing with things like this, in fact the trading website of every broker I have used is designed to take account of it.

No risk for the broker - the MM tells him the price, his software tells him how many, you give him the go-ahead while the price is stil held. Bob's your uncle.

A statement of trading. Not sure what the official meaning is but roughly hows it going on the front lines on a short term basis.

I should probably find out the exact difference from interim results, etc. I presume results are more final and accounted for and trading is pre tax and exclusive of any other long term adjustments like depreciation in machinery worth or something like that

Right upto the end I expect bank trading statements were just dandy and still are.

Tesco trading statement at this year start :
The Tesco Group has delivered a strong performance and record sales over the Christmas and New Year period. Group sales increased by 11.6% during the seven weeks to 10 January 2009, driven by continued rapid international expansion and steady growth in the UK. This growth is against the background of challenging trading conditions in all of our markets caused by the global economic slowdown.

    Good International Progress

Our overseas businesses generally saw good growth over the Christmas and New Year period, delivering a total International sales increase of 32.7%, helped by favourable exchange rate movements in Europe, and a particularly strong performance in Asia.
In Europe, sales grew by 24%, with growth at constant exchange rates slowing compared with our third quarter, reflecting the economic conditions in parts of Central Europe and in Ireland. We have grown share in all of our markets. Sales in Asia increased by 43%, with strong growth in Korea, China and Malaysia. The integration of the acquired Homever stores in Korea is going well, with the introduction of the Homeplus Tesco ranges and lower prices proving very popular with customers. Sales at converted stores have increased by more than 50%.
In the United States, Fresh & Easy has been coping well with a severe downturn in the West Coast markets in which it trades. Like-for-like growth is strongly double-digit for the 28 stores which have now been open more than a year.
    Steady UK Performance

In the UK, like-for-like sales excluding petrol increased by 2.5% in the period.

Our Preliminary Results for 2008/9 will be released on 21 April 2009.

So lots of sales figures and leeway for 'we are doing great' I think results have to be audited by someone external
