It depends on the deal agreed by shareholders. You might receive cash for your shares, or shares in the company doing the takeover, or a combination of both.0 -
I was going to sign up to selftrade, someone mentioned that they do a refferal scheme. Would anyone like to refer me? Is there a seperate thread for this?0

I will admit I am a NOOB in this area, but have been enjoying making a little cash with my new Selftrade account..
Basically buying on the house building firms, and selling a few days later.
Have 2 goes, made around 15% on the first attempt, and nearly 20% earlier this week.
It is a bit of fun.. Also been doing the buying and selling on the mobile, so no £12.50 charge (1st 5 trades)..
Anyways, apart from a bad tip regarding M&S, I am doing ok.
I have a couple of longer term punts, and am really confused about the dividends that I may get...
Now, I understand I can not buy some shares just before a dividend payout, as everyone would, then sell. So I assume the companies have dates that your must hold shares to qualify for a payout, and again dates you must be still holding the shares for the payout to be made??
Do sites (On selftrade) have these dates, as I fancy looking around for companies close to the qualification date for holding shares to paying a dividend, keeping the cash in for this time, taking the dividend and cashing the shares in (unless it is worth keeping them).
If selftrade do not hold dates for this, do you know of sites that hold this data???
I know I am a noob, but admit it totally..0 -
6022tivo, generally speaking the day the shares go ex dividend they drop by the amount of the dividend.0

Selftrade called me after I opened and traded to ask if everything was ok, and thank you for opening a account. I asked the question like two posts above, and they did answer with the "ex dividend" reply like yours.. However, what is the "ex dividend", is this the time you have to be "in" to get a dividend??..
I am being a numpty, I know??0 -

It's OK - no-one is born knowing this stuff! Ex dividend means that the share is trading without the right to collect the dividend. The value of the dividend is no longer contained in the share price, so the price is marked down roughly by that much.0 -
How does one know if the share is ex dividend or not?0

Go to the company's website. They should have a section for investors, including a financial calendar - example.0
