I've got about 500 shares in Dragon Oil which I bought about 8 years ago.

I can't find the share certificate anywhere. How do I go about getting a new certificate, or do I not need one these days? Is it possible to sell the shares via an electronic service without the certificate?

Sorry if these are daft questions, but I haven't done any share dealing in years and the technology has rather overtaken me

Thanks for the address, but do I need to ask them for a replacement certificate, or do they do things electronically these days?

You will need to ask for a paper certificate to replace the one you had, plus its possible that they will charge a fee

Anyone heard about MCI Technologies Star Trader? Just got something in the post about how wonderful they are,, they "guarantee" your money back - which is not much use if you use their system to loose money on the stock market, as they won't give you your losses back.
I was a little worried by the quote of a 70 year old on the back page who uses their system, with limited funds to play the stock market. It seems his risk profile is not quite what they are providing for.

If it was so good, they would be using it to make money themselves - not selling their software/system to other people...

I have a paper certificate for 300-odd shares and am thinking of selling them, but the prices I have been quoted for selling them is from £25 to £45!
Has anyone had a cheaper quote?
I do not want to trade regularly so this would be a one-off sale.

Yes, there are several cheaper methods to sell them. Normally they involve opening a online share dealing account, sending them your share certificate and then using them to sell your shares - it doesn't matter if its only a one-off trade as many brokers don't charge fees for having an account (some do though)

    For instance:

    1) HSBC InvestDirect will charge you £11.95/trade to sell your shares, if you have a HSBC current account.

    2) Selftrade charge £12.50/trade but also have a referral scheme where you could get up to £80 (my details are in post 242 in that thread) for joining them - assuming the 300 shares are worth a total of £500+

    Regards

Considering the drop in shares prices in banking sectors I am thinking of taking a long term investment and buy £8,000.00 worth of shares in say barclays of hsbc.
Could you please tell me which is the quickest and cheapest way of carrying out this transaction.

Any feedback on this transaction please.

    Many thanks
