Sorry, I cannot answer your questions as I'm a novice but would like to know where Martin's article(s) on shares are. Good luck with the long term strategy you mention.

The reason why you won't find much information on this site about Shares or read Martin's views on them is that MSE really isn't an investment website - it concentrates on money saving not money making. For that you would be better off somewhere like the Motley Fool (http://www.fool.co.uk/)

    Hi

I'm fairly new to share-dealing myself.

I would perhaps suggest that you first read The Naked Trader by Robbie Williams, to decide if share-dealing is right for you. I'm still a newbie to this, but I think it covers off a lot, and it's fairly easy to read imo.

I suppose it depends why you want do share dealing. If you want to be a day trader, then use an execution only service. If you want to build your shares gradually up over time, then maybe Halifax Sharebuilder??

There are many comparision sites out there that lets you quickly compare different share-dealing accounts.

I like x-o.co.uk who offer trades at £5.95.

For International trades, I would maybe use Halifax sharedealing, but their commission is a bit pricey..

    I like Halifax's research web-site www.halifaxmarketwatch.co.uk.
HL research faciilties are also very good imo.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

It was reduced recently same as LSE dealing but they increased the currency conversion to 1% at the same time I think

I have some shares which are just "lying" in an account with TD Waterhouse, they were transferred over from Hoodless Brennan, I don't do trading but I am charged £10 per quarter where at one time it used to be free. How can I get these put back to a paper certificate, it's just a waste of money at the moment.:o

What did TDW say? It shouldn't be a problem, though probably a one-off charge.

    Hi all

I'm looking for some advice on how i can sell shares that are held for me by a Danish bank. I was given these shares when i worked for a company that is owned by a Danish firm. I have trawled through UK brokers but none seem to deal on Danish stockexchange. Hope this makes sense !!

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Today I bought shares myself for the first time. I bought a small sum through The Share Centre.

I'm slightly confused though as to some of the terminology.

The prices for NEW are Bid - 5.00p, Offer - 5.50p, Open - 5.25p. It also says there has been no change today but the day high/low is 5.25p/5.13p...

So what do these terms mean?

When I bought some it found the 'best price' at the time which was 5.14p (the same as listed on Google Finance). When I come to sell them do they also sell at the rate listed on Finance websites?

    Thanks!

Bid = the price you will get for them
Offer = the price you have to pay for them
The price quoted on may sites is the mid price (halfway between the bid/offer quotes) although many sites quote the last traded price so if it was a sell it would be the bid price and if it was a buy then the offer price (shareprice.co.uk does and if the price you paid = the price quoted I think Google finance does (as they get their prices from shareprice.co.uk this is no surprise) is quoted.

If it says no movement it means the difference between the opening (mid) price and the closing (mid) price. It does not mean the price has not moved throughout the day just that it finished where it started.

Yes and no in regards the price you will get depends on the liquidity of the share and if it moves a lot and if the last traded price was a sell and not a buy.

    Hope this helps a little
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.
