Marriage Allowance Tax Rebate?

I’ve recently seen a post on Facebook advertising a tax rebate for those using their marriage allowance. The company is called Marriage Allowance Tax Rebates (funnily enough!).

I requested the paperwork but am unsure if it’s just a scam to get your personal details.

I’ve asked HMRC if they are legit and they just said that companies like that will charge a fee for their service and that it’s up to us if we give them our details.

My question is this...is there such a thing as a rebate? I don’t recall them saying they had backdated it when I filled in the application online, they just transferred it to hubby. I know it only started in 2015 but I applied last year so am wondering if there is perhaps a years worth of backdated tax maybe to claim.

Can anyone help please!?

Don't use a company, just do it yourself

Anyone who applies for Marriage Allowance can only ever pay more tax, not less.

It is their spouse who could pay less and get a tax refund.

The company you mention cannot do anything different to what you can do yourself. Except they will be legally entitled to a part of any tax refund your spouse is due.

But it seems you have already applied yourself so I am at a loss as to why you want to get involved with a company in the first place?

Surely you know which tax years you applied for?

Assuming you do then you just need to check with your spouse to see if they have received the benefit of Marriage Allowance for whichever tax years you applied for. This isn't necessarily a refund, it could maybe reduce the amount of any tax your spouse owed (still makes them better off but isn't necessarily cash in their hand).

Have you checked what tax code your spouse is on at the moment, in particular the letter at the end of the tax code?
  • Do it online - you could have it backdated to 2015

  • I can’t actually remember what it asked for when I applied. I did that last year but I know that it has been around since 2015 so I guess what I’m wondering is how I find out if it was backdated. I can check hubbies tax code, what would the letter mean?

If receiving marriage allowance his tax code will have the suffix M - as 1234M. If giving your tax code would be suffix N. So if you have old payslips or P60s this will be easy to find.
  • What molerat has suggested is a great starting point. The only problem you might encounter is if some years were applied for retrospectively.

In that situation your husband should have received a P800 calculation allowing the tax credit due for Marriage Allowance. And either a cheque for any refund or an invite to go onto his Personal Tax Account and transfer the tax overpaid into his bank account.
  • My wife has used a company called Marriage Allowance Tax Rebate to claim the marriage allowance from HMRC. She sent the document back to them in the post on the 21st January and we have had no response. In the small print they are charging 35%. I have applied direct online with HMRC today. Is there any way i can get out of the contract with the company my wife used?

Perhaps you could clarify exactly what has happened.

You start by saying your wife used a company to claim Marriage Allowance.

You finish by saying you applied online.

Which one of you actually applied?

The person applying either pays more tax or the same. They can never get a tax refund.

Did you sign anything with the claims company?

I think it reads, his wife applied with the company that wants 35%, but OP has subsequently applied online, and wants to know if they can get out of the first application.

So it comes back to the question of what exactly has been signed

If the wife and only the wife signed up to the company then that application would mean the company would get 35% of £0 as far as Marriage Allowance is concerned as anyone who applies for Marriage Allowance can only ever pay the same or more tax, never less.

But if the op has now applied then that would mean his wife would potentially be getting a refund because of receiving Marriage Allowance (subject to her income and tax paid).

However, until the op can actually clarify what has really happened it is all guesswork. It may be that he doesn't really mean he applied but the problem with an internet forum is that you can only go by what is written.

And at the moment he is saying his wife applied. And he applied. Which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
