Marriage Allowance Tax Rebate?

In the small print they are charging 35%.
Since there appears to have been a hijack in this thread, perhaps I might just throw in the general principle that applies to these contracts or a PPI reclaim or an employment contract or any contract really.
* If you have signed it, you have agreed.
* If you have signed it without reading, you have agreed.
* If you have signed it, but you were told something different you have agreed - unless you can prove misrepresentation which is usually a long shot.

Stick to the advice given by D&C and do it yourself and save the 35% (plus VAT?)Unlike some here, I am not omniscient. If I am wrong correct me. I won't take offence.

She sent the document back to them in the post on the 21st January and we have had no response. In the small print they are charging 35%. I have applied direct online with HMRC today. Is there any way i can get out of the contract with the company my wife used?
did you manage to get out of this?0 -
You signed to authorise them to claim on your behalf and you also signed that they would charge a fee for doing it. So there is nothing you can do about it now.
Check with HMRC that the repayment authorisation is not still on your record. Otherwise all future repayment could automatically be sent to them , even if they didn't make the claim. You need to make sure that the authorisation is no longer valid or cancel it , if necessary.0 -
Hi
my wife completed the online marriage allowance transfer in mid January 2020 for all years from 2015 and my tax code was adjusted [increased by £1250] within two weeks. for the 2019/2020 tax period. However I've not yet received a tax rebate. for the preceding years. What is an acceptable waiting period before contacting the HMRC?0 -

Could you have been a higher rate payer in the previous tax years?
If not you've probably waited long enough, I would chase it up now.0 -
the company called ensign advisory ltd say they will sort out your marriage allowance. this is a scam as after contacting HMRC i have now found out that my tax code has changed and this company have done this before now i owe the tax people over 900 as this company sent me a cheque or just over 400 then they claimed over 900 from HMRC how can this happen it is a disgrace as they are not helping us but themselves. what a scam done believe a word from this company plus we never even signed a agreement for them to do this. just asked them to check the details0

The form you signed would be authorising them to make a claim to HMRC. It would also advise you of the fee they take form the repayment
Our fee of 35% + Vat (42% including VAT) plus £100 (including VAT) of the total HMRC repayment is payable if a payment released.
.
the reason you owe money to HMRC is probably because both of you were liable to pay tax on your incomes so one party got a refund and the other got a bill.
Marriage Allowance works by the person with the lower income givsing the other person some of their personal allowances. the Transfer part of the name.
So their personal allowances are reduced. if that person was already paying tax then they are now due to pay more tax as they have less personal allowances to set against their income.
I would suggest this is what has happened to you.
These companies ( there is more than one) do not 'check your tax'. They submit a claim and HMRC action the claim.
Had you claimed direct with HMRC then one of you would have got a refund and the other a bill just the same , but then you could have used the refund to pay the bill.
BecauSe you used a company who took a fee out of the repayment you now have received less than the bill due.
As the Marriage Allowance claim will operate for future year you need to contact HMRC ad get it stopped going forward,
Also, advise HMRC you do not authorise this company to act for you or receive any future repayments.
Marriage Allowance transfer is only of benefit if one party pays no tax on their income.

Marriage Allowance transfer is only of benefit if one party pays no tax on their income.
Or the person applying is only liable on dividend income
But sheramber has summed it up perfectly. Big lesson learned for you.0 -
