too good too be true ??

  • I have been having an email conversation with "David John Rose" regarding a Motorhome that was on eBay & was so cheap I knew it was too good to be true. I asked for my family in Isle of Man to view but he this doesn't seem to be an option. I worry that someone will be duped by him to get a bargain.
  • He's still at it. Ebay number 401734914096. S-Max, greatly under priced.

Stringing him long and have reported him to action fraud. He's still claims to be in the Isle of Man.

Told him I had a good buddy who lives on the Isle of Man who would look at the car and purchase on my behalf. That should save him shipping costs. He still prefers to deliver via the escrow company though. He has given me an address, Wish I actually knew somebody on the Isle of Man that could check that out for me.

Gonna play him a bit longer i think, get the bank account number he is using and notify the bank.

I thought that would have put them off, but no....

"We can do everything through the transport company, uShip, they are taking care of everything and they can arrange a delivery to your address. If this is going to be a quick sale, I will let it go for £6,000 with the delivery charges included. If you decide to buy the vehicle let me know, as I have a lot of people enquiring about, and send me an e-mail with your full details (Full name, Address, Phone number). As soon as I have your details I will pass them to the shipping company and they will start the procedures. Next step they will get in touch with you and send you an invoice for the vehicle, the tracking number to check the status of the delivery at any time and all the rest of the transaction details. After you've received the invoice you'll need to make the payment by bank transfer to the transport company (NOT to me) and they will hold the money into their bank account until you receive, inspect and agreed to keep the vehicle. For the buyer's peace of mind I've also added a 5 DAYS REFUND POLICY so if you won't like the vehicle, you'll receive a full refund, no fees or taxes deducted. If the vehicle is not as described, the transport company will transfer the money back into your bank account. If you decide to keep the vehicle after the 5 days inspection period, you will need to sign the owner transfer papers and only then I will get the money from the transport company.
    Regards,
    David John Rose"
I did similar with a caravan advert that screamed SCAM.

Said caravan was supposedly in Wick northern Scotland.

I mailed and asked if still available, mail back immediately saying it was.

I mailed back saying it was just what I wanted and would have it, said I owned a car delivery company and was in Scotland most weeks and I could collect on my empty transporter in the next few days, and I would pay cash on collection saving them fees and the delivery charge which they could keep anyway.

Mail back within four hours saying it was unfortunately now sold.

    What a surprise
  • Thanks to everyone out there for sharing this. We nearly got scammed for a caravan. Over the last 24 hours we were trying to buy a Hobby caravan in Scotland through the eBay advert. Asked to contact seller outside of eBay by email. No reply to the phone which rang out with foreign ring tone. The emails exchanged made me very suspicious of a John Rose user name lestev3 the purported seller.
The reply he sent us gave us great concern and the response given to us was identical to his scam posted on here.
We were at the point of paying £4,800 of hard earned money taking a 3 hour trip to Glasgow to see & buy a Hobby Caravan that may not exist in our opinion. He uses a similar modus operandi to the car scam.
  • Thanks to everyone out there for sharing this. My wife nearly got scammed for a hobby caravan. Over the last 24 hours she was trying to buy it from him through ebay ad. No reply to the phone which rang out with foreign ring tone.

She was on the verdge of paying £4,800 into escrow account and wait for uship delivery.
I'm so pleased to have found this thread.

Why anyone would pay for a car online that they've never seen in person is beyond me

We have bought 2 cars online (Ebay) that we had never seen and both times we have been absolutely delighted with our buys

If we were to fly over to look at cars we liked the look off, it wouldn't be worth it. Genuine sellers are the ones who go the extra mile and film the car in real time for you, show you the paper work they have etc etc

Actually we do tend to buy a lot of large value items, sight unseen, from GB.

    Good luck with that.

It seems the poster has indeed had good luck ;)
  • The scam advert for the Hobby caravan is still on eBay (Item No. 223461664306). Looked up on Google pictures for caravans of the same model & found the title picture with the woman sat outside available for free use! The picture was taken in 2015 and appeared on an advert selling it in London. The mobile phone number didn’t work surprisingly. Is he recycling his adverts?
We reported the current advert as fraudulent to eBay but it’s still there. Surely Plod or Fraud Squad can track him down and take him off the web?
