The horror stories relate to the older model R53 and R56. The F56 variant came out in 2014 and is basically a BMW underneath. The Cooper S now runs a 2.0i Turbo BMW engine rather than a bought in engine, for example.

Feels much more BMW like but still has the MINI character.

Also, for your budget you'd be buying new or close to new and it will (a) be an F56 and (b) be under manufacturers warranty.

Annual mileage is around 15k a year, currently have a VW Polo 1.2 15 plate, not keen on 4x4 or saloons, prefer a hatchback or coupe.
Looking for something a bit more stylish and nippy!

I'm not keen on the chunky look of the new Civic, I had a Civic years ago and loved it but the styling on the new one isn't my thing, I wish they did something a bit nicer looking.
