Bank banked cheque into some one elses account

I posted a cheque i received from a charitable trust in the first week of December. In the envelope, were my name address and banking details.

After not seeing the cheque credited into my account for over a week i queried it.

I was told it hadnt been banked.

I contacted the charitable trusts bank - unity trust bank, and they confirmed that the cheque had been cashed , giving me a cheque number and a quite strange sort code and account number that had appeared on the back of the cheque -how they get this info i dont know.

i went back to my bank -Lloyds -and they told me to reclaim the cheque,in fact through long ,incredibly excruciatingly poor phone calls to me, you know, where they phone you up and start asking you questions, because they haven't prepared themselves before the phone call, i said NO - .

I pointed out that my name is on the cheque, payable to me, and they have paid it into the wrong account, being that mysteriously the cheque has been paid into a lloyds account it would suggest a bank employee has made a mistake or the cheque has been stolen and banked at a lloyds?

The bank have know for several weeks and dont seem to be doing any thing and actually have my money.
In someone elses account -i have given them the cheque number etc.

as you can imagine -lloyds are asking me to reclaim the cheque -this costs money, so no,i would understand it is their fault they have deposited the cheque into someone elses account.

Can anyone offer any advice on how to make these people simply look at where the cheque has gone, which account, and simply pay me my money?

Funnily enough after i had this experience i noticed a cheque scanning service in my mobile app which i have used since - in one complaint phone call to the bank the operator asked why i hadnt used this system for the previous cheque (my fault eh?)

    I' can't advise on your next steps however I'm surprised that the bank even accepted the cheque for processing.
    I thought these days you had to provide either your debit card if in person or a pre-printed paying in slip if paying in remotely via a credit point slot or by post.

    I suppose the best advise you will need to raise it officially as a formal written complaint to get the process going.

    I have completed numerous online complaints.

    Raise formal complaint and if not satisfied go to FOS.

    I suspect it is just a simple mistake they have probably keyed in the wrong account number from the paying-in slip you provided with the cheque

    mistakes happen although I understand it is annoying to you

    if you can get to a branch then go there and discuss it with them you are likely to get more sense person to person

    if you really can't make any progress then as above make a formal complaint they have 6 weeks to respond

    I am not sure what you mean by 'reclaim the cheque' so I can't offer any advice on that
  • LLOYDS asked me to ell the issuer of the cheque to cancel the cheque. Which would cost me money.
    After speaking with the people who issued the cheque, they more or less told me that i should say no, as the cheque was paid out to me personally and they have bank it into someone elses account.
  • Make a formal complaint, in writing, outlining your issue and your proposed resolution (ie. they sort themselves out, and get the money into your account without charging you any fees). If/when they do not respond, or don't resolve the issue to your satisfaction then you are allowed to escalate to the FOS. This can be done after 8 weeks, or sooner if they issue a final response before then.

    All you need is a 2-line, formal, written, complaint to Lloyds, with the simple fact that cheque xxx from company yyy, payable to you, has been paid to someone else. Don't include information about any other cheques as that's not relevant.

    You can use their online complaint form
  • Sent a few letters (all the same) to complaints and the bank itself. Pointed out to the operator that closure of branches,refusal to give out telephone numbers nor even the name of managers was pushing people away and this inevitably lead to normal people like themselves -unemployed.

    There's your explanation for why it takes them so long to resolve your issues.

    I think you've been lucky over the years.

    I pay in cheques via the Post Office using dedicated envelopes - and I have to use a paying in slip, not just a letter with name, address and bank details.
    Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
