AA COMPLAINTS

Hello guys,

I am absolutely furious right now! I have an AA policy that covers me for breakdowns and gives me parts and labour of up to £500 if it needs to go into a garage.

I drive a BMW 5 series (2011) for the record and last week I noticed a noise coming from my bonnet when I start my engine. I had a 200-300 mile journey ahead of me last week so I wanted to make sure that I was safe to embark on this venture, so I called out an AA breakdown engineer to take a look at my car.

When he arrived he spent over an hour investigating what the problem was and concluded that my turbo charger needed replacing.

I asked him if I could still do the 200-300 mile drive and was advised that I would be fine to take on my journey and that I could also additionally do short journeys, although I did need to book it into a garage quite soon, in which I did and got an appointment with my local garage within a week of seeing the AA patrol engineer.

I also want to state that he assured me that my car wouldn’t breakdown and that I would get a further warning on my dashboard if something was majorly wrong.

So following the AA engineers advice, I made my 200-300 mile journey and carried out small essential journeys whilst waiting for the garage to take my car in.

Unfortunately during this time my car broke down on a motorway in a dangerous place.

When I broke down the first AA recovery driver (called out on that day) refused to come out and said that he feared for his own life as I had broken down in such a dangerous place.

After being broken down on a busy motorway NOT EVEN ON A HARD SHOULDER for over an hour. I called the police for assistance and The highway patrol arrived to warn the on coming traffic before another AA patrol man attended and explained that he had argued with the previous patrol driver for refusing to help me.

He recovered me home and then I later got my car towed into the garage.

The garage are now telling me that my timing chain has snapped and that this WOULDN’T have happened if I didn’t drive the additional 200-300 miles that the original AA patrol driver advised me that I could.

And Get this they are now telling that I need a whole new engine and that the cost for this is 4K and up.

I now have no car and a family who rely on me. Xmas is around the corner and the garage along with everything else will shut shop for the festive season next week.

I have made a complaint to the AA and they have just told me that any complaint will take 5 working days to address.

So in the meantime I am stuck with no car and believe me I rely on my vehicle for everything and so does my family.

What can I do in this situation? Are companies out the who could assist me with making a claim against the AA for risking my life and causing additional costs to my car. And can I get someone to put me in a courtesy car until my vehicle is fixed?

Please I really need help here, this is the worst timing and thank you in advance.

My first thought is that the turbo problem would seem to be independent of the timing chain problem. If that's true, then you are a victim of an unfortunate coincidence. I don't believe that the AA can effectively warranty your car for a long journey and even if they verbally said it would be ok, you undertook that journey and the others at your own risk. You could have addressed the problem there and then rather than delaying it.

I don't see how you can lay the blame for the ruined engine at the AA's door, nor can you claim they endangered your life. That's emotive nonsense that adds nothing to your complaint.

Timing chains tend to go without any warning. Lights only usually come on when they have gone and then the dash lights up like a Christmas tree.

I don't see how a turbo problem could cause the chain to go.

    Hi

    Sorry about your woes.

As the other poster said, timing chain/belt and turbo are unrelated.

Timing chains rattle a lot usually before breaking, usually, belts break. Not usually covered
by extended warranties as they deem it as 'wear and tear' rightly or wrongly. I know because of the Peugeot we had years ago bought from main dealer, 5k on the clock, serviced by us via main dealer at the recoemmded interval/mileage at two years the chain rattled and they said it was not covered so we paid almost 1k for the repairs.

You may get goodwill due to the AA mans or representatives behaviour, lack of response.

    2011 5-series... Timing chain...

520d with an N47, by any chance?

The noise wasn't the turbo. It was the chain's death rattle.

Perhaps if people drove in lane 1 instead of the default BMW/Audi lane of the outside lane then when there was a mechanical problem they could move over onto the hard shoulder instead of being stuck in a live lane....

What can I do in this situation?
Could you rent something until it's fixed . .?
