Could you rent something until it's fixed . .?

The OP will have to - unless the garage they send it to for fixing have a courtesy car (which won't be a 5 series BMW) then renting is likely to be the main option

Alternatively depending on requirements over Christmas a quick, short MOT Bangernomics purchase might work out cheaper for a more suitable sized vehicle

My first thought is that the turbo problem would seem to be independent of the timing chain problem. If that's true, then you are a victim of an unfortunate coincidence. I don't believe that the AA can effectively warranty your car for a long journey and even if they verbally said it would be ok, you undertook that journey and the others at your own risk. You could have addressed the problem there and then rather than delaying it.

I don't see how you can lay the blame for the ruined engine at the AA's door, nor can you claim they endangered your life. That's emotive nonsense that adds nothing to your complaint.

The bottom line is that I called out the AA for professional advice and safety. As I am not a mechanic I cannot make these calls. If the AA engineer said that I could be risking my car and safety, I WOULDN’T HAVE TAKEN THE RISK.

I trusted him as a professional

AA are a breakdown rescue service.
Professional mechanics are few and far between, mostly just part fitters.

So what you going do, hire something? You didn't reply last time I asked.

You are stuck until your complaint is processed, and will need to hire a car, or take taxis I'm afraid.

I doubt if it is official AA policy for an engineer to assure you that a car with an engine noise would definitely be ok for a 200mile motorway drive, and he will doubtless deny ever having said it, so it will be your word against his.

He should have been able to head straight for a noisy timing chain from the badge on the back and a glance at the engine type though, so there may be an element of misdiagnosis, but the n47 has been known to break chains without warning and that particular noise could have been from the turbo, none of us have heard it.

As to what comeback you might have, I've no idea.

Hardly the AA's fault you drove on a managed motorway (I certainly won't), but I thought that the Highways agency or Police would have moved you off the carriageway in less time than an hour and charged you, we have had posters complaining of just that, and getting a refund of the fee from the AA because they were so late arriving.

No, the bottom line is that you are without a working car and you will find it very difficult to lay the blame for that on the AA, especially as you willingly drove hundreds of miles in a car you knew had a problem. You perhaps have a legitimate complaint about the situation over the recovery, but that's all. That will be resolved in due course, but you're not going to get the cost of a new engine out of them, nor the cost of a hire car, and nor are you owed anything for them supposedly "risking your life". They didn't.

I can't see how you can blame the AA
I also suspect you don't need an entire new engine, I competent mechanic should be able to repair it, depending on how serious the damage is

He assured you the car would not breakdown? Probably needed new batteries in his crystal ball.

Cars can breakdown without warning even new ones so how will this guy know that yours wont breakdown?

You knew there was something wrong and called out the AA instead of taking it to a garage?

Are you sure he didnt say he assured you the car had not broken down at the current time and you need a garage and not the AA?
