The "old" method of rooting phones meant that you'd run everything as root instead of as a limited user. That's a security risk, and stops apps that require unrooted phones from running.

You can enable root in Lineage OS, but everything will still run as a normal/limited user UNLESS the app specifically requests root permissions, and you allow them.

My NatWest banking app works fine, but I've heard that some apps don't work (possibly because they can tell you're running Lineage instead of stock Android).

I'm currently running Lineage on an S5 - Natwest for me is also fine, the Hargreaves app (which would not run on my S4 on Cyanogen 12) works fine on Lineage.
Ok, I haven't yet enabled root (no need yet), that app for one doesn't appear to care what ROM it is running on.

Another vote here for the OP trying Lineage & seeing how you get on.

Do you happen to know if MobilExpression will run on lineage os?

I just installed and ran it. But it wanted me to register for an account and install their VPN and enable accessibility mode (which is a bit of a security vulnerability), so I didn't test it beyond that.

(EDIT: Also, which of the various versions of Gapps would you recommend - the x86_64 Android 7.1 package looks like the obvious one, but it's pretty big!)

No -- you'll need the ARM version (32-bit). There are different GApps packages. It's definitely worth installing the smallest pico version. The others install a lot of junk you probably don't want/need.

If you need a component that isn't included in pico (like GMail or Google Calendar), you can install them manually via the Play store.

Now when I try to boot to recovery mode I can't get past the yellow triangle screen. Any ideas?

Hmmm... Let me have a look through my garbled notes... I'll have a think and get back to you shortly...

So I finally managed to get back into recovery mode and tried flashing the lineageos ROM. When I opt for the zip verification at time of flashing it fails every time. I tried re-downloading a fresh copy of the ROM but same thing. So I installed it anyway but when I reboot it gets stuck at the blue arc with the animated blue circle.

I've tried repeating steps 2-6 but it hasn't helped
    ???

EDIT: Ah, never mind -- our last posts crossed. :-)

    Give this a go:

    1. First, disconnect the phone from the PC, and reboot the PC.
    2. Start ODIN.
    3. Ensure that Re-Partition is NOT ticked.
    4. Ensure that Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time ARE ticked.
    5. Leave the PIT field empty.
    6. Choose the same PDA file (lp-kernel-14-03-CWM-for + ODIN.tar).
    7. Boot the phone into download mode (not recovery).
    8. Connect the phone to the PC via USB.
    9. Click "Start" to begin the flash process.
Your phone should reboot, and you should then be able to (re)boot into CWM recovery.

Did you manage to get the TWRP, kernel, Lineage and GApps files transferred to the micro SD card?

Oh -- the first time you boot Lineage, it takes AGES to boot. I guess it's installing a lot of stuff. Have you left it for an hour or so to see if it finally completes...?

If you abort the installation before it's finished, I think you'll need to format all the partitions (except the micro SD and recovery), otherwise the next installation will fail.

OK I tried downloading the previous version of the ROM and that seemed to install OK but....
The setup wizard keeps crashing (so I just keep restarting it), and I can't get the onscreen keyboard to work. Whenever I need to enter text during the setup process (e.g. wifi password, my name) I can't enter anything because I can't get the keyboard to pop up. I've tried repeatedly tapping in the text field but just can't get it.
Has anyone else had this problem?

No... But it sounds like you're almost there!

Did you install GApps immediately after Lineage, without rebooting...? I remember having problems when trying to install GApps to Lineage once it had been installed.

It sounds like an installation problem of some kind. It might be worth booting into recovery, wiping all partitions (except the micro-SD), and trying to install again.

Yes I installed Gapps immmediately after the ROM, without rebooting. I'll let this install finish to see if it corrects itself (it's been on "Android is starting" for the last 15 minutes), then try wiping and reinstalling if the problem remains.

That's really odd. I'm running the latest (16 Nov) release and it's fine here. I don't understand that at all. :undecided

Good luck! You're at the last stage now, so don't give up! It took me a good couple of weeks of studying and breaking stuff till I got to where you are now. :)

Lineage should run at least as well as the old stock Android. The first boot and "initial set up" can be really slow and laggy, so be patient. But if it's doing "slow/weird stuff" after that, there's something wrong with the installation.

Once it's up and running smoothly, I'm sure you'll think it was worth it.
