    Costs being:
    - huge debt and deficits (both trade and budget).
    - missed opportunities in creating our own technologically advanced economy due to being ruled by the EU.
    - a class of people in this country who are completely lost economically and feel left out in society.
    - the next generation feeling angry and bitter about not having the same standard of living as their parents.

Of course we will have to come to terms with the downsides - they are confined to the short term if the changes are to be implemented properly. No one should expect everything to be rosy all the time - life and the world does not work like that.

The growth outside of the US we have seen over the last 10 years has been very low. One of the reasons for major changes to occur. the US is doing very well because its policies encourage investment. Europe encourage socialism and regulations which is easily seen to be a disaster.

It seems to me generally the people who oppose Brexit, Trump etc are mainly middle class who have cushy jobs and low cost living due to immigration and low cost goods imported from China. All this will have a cost further down the line if it isn't changed.

True in the generalisations of who voted Brexit and Trump, but don’t you think these people are *much less* able to pay the higher prices of goods?

I agree that we should be paying a higher price for stuff in many cases, but it will hit the poorest hardest not the wealthy. Even the relatively poor in the UK can currently afford leased cars, high end mobile phones and other electronic gadgets. This is all possible because of the very system that they are voting against!

Oh sorry I've been wasting my time, it was just more "it's an EU conspiracy" posting, I must have missed all those massive steps that the UK wanted to do to reverse globalisation and create an advanced technological economy, but were stopped from doing by the EU.

The UK underinvesting isn't just a problem post EU membership oddly enough.....

Anyway it would be good if we could get back vaguely on topic here, on what was an interesting thread on the global economic outlook.

No the middle class can easily afford higher prices. They have accumulated a lot of wealth and this wealth will be passed down tot heir children, many of whom have decent jobs and so not only will they receive a lot of gifts and inheritance but also they would have accumulated a lot of wealth by themselves.

The poorest will see their wages rise which can pay for the higher prices. also it depends on what is being brought back to the UK to be produced here. It maybe that necessities like food will still be imported from cheaper countries and also we would produce our own food as opposed to places like France which could actually make it cheaper as well. Its not as simple as everything will rise in price.

No the poor can only afford these things because they have to get into debt to buy these things. with rising wages for them they would no longer need to go into debt to afford these things. In fact cars should drop in price as we can import from many other countries not just German cars. Phones and electronic gadgets will still be imported from the same countries we import them from, nothing will change about that, the cost probably wont change at all. Meanwhile worker wages will rise so they don't need to get into stupid debt to buy these things.

Its not an EU conspiracy posting. All i am saying is it is far better to not be governed at all by the EU when it comes to our own country. I do not see any benefit at all for being part of the EU. Once we get our independence, we can do what we want for our own interests and not have to comply with any sort of rules or regulations by the EU. It is really that simple.

From purely a UK perspective. Where's the growth going to come from? PPI has almost run it's course. Interest rates are edging upwards. Pay settlements are low and for many public sector workers below even CPI. Productivity shows no signs of improving. Consumer debt levels are high.

Perhaps the party is finally over. Post GFC fiscal policies simply deferring the inevitable. A period of consolidation as well. That kills off the zombie companies that are hanging onto to survive. The High Street massacre is far from over.
  • Many factors are pushing globally towards recession.
Trump's policies; Russian AND Chinese aggression; the gradual dawning acknowledgement that the global climate IS changing; a new industrial revolution with a move away from combustion engine-powered travel for example; a change in mood and resulting rise in populism; etc. etc. etc.
If Brexit does end up no-deal that could be enough to tip the scales towards a full-blown global recession, some say.

On the other hand of course we've all been here before, with warnings of impending disaster ahead if .... but previous recessions haven't been widely predicted with any accuracy.
The only certainty is that the world is changing.

All I am saying is that we already have a Brexit thread, it would be nice to have this discussion on broader issues, as personally I would find it nice to have another thread that wasn't completely dominated by it, maybe just me though.
