Can anybody recommend any of the smaller / cheaper energy suppliers who don't insist on a smart meter being installed as part of the deal?
...or who can refer me to a section of this forum where this issue is discussed. Thanks

Most Bulb members will have the option to request and book in for a smart installation appointment at the start of 2019. We’ll be contacting everyone about smart meters throughout 2019 and 2020.0 -
It says optional.
I’ve just switched from Bulb to Pure Planet who were cheaper, although only slightly cheaper with their forthcoming price increase.0 -
I'm using Flow. No smart meter required when I switched a couple of years ago.For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0

You have a choice as I have pointed out to the Ombudsman in a submission correcting errors in a report. I am with Eversmart having just switched from GBEnergy (Co-op) and have refused SMART meters from both.0

I am with EDF and went for their cheapest tariff but on reading the small print it was in the "terms &conditions" that I had to accept a Smart Meter being installed. So much for free choice!
I do not ever want a Smart Meter so on comparing other sites again I opted to stay with EDF but on their next tariff which is dearer.
I found that the other sites dont tell you that you have to have one untill you have signed up
I decided it was worth paying a bit more not to be bullied into having one but am not happy about this.
This is the government forcing companies to push this and therefore costing the public more for energy if they dare to refuse as they have to take a dearer tarrif.0 -

Since the descision was made many years ago by refusing you are costing even more becauase you have to be contacted repeatadly as the supplier has to make sure your refusal passes the bar as otherwise they will get fined (and guess what thats going to cost us more too).
But feel free to keep pushing up costs for everyone and stay on your sub optimal tarrifs. You will end up with a smart meter eventually anway, although not operating in smart mode, because no one is buying other meters and the old stock will eventually stop working.0 -

Contacting isn't the same as forcing you to have one.
At present I don't have one and I don't intend having one in the future.0 -
I am with EDF and they keep trying to get me to install a smart meter even though it would be in my cellar where it would not work. They have tried various tactics, including making appointments without the option and telling me my meter is old and obsolete (it is not) and has to be changed by law. When I phoned them to say I did not want one at present, I was given a very hostile reply that I had to have one by law.
Even if I give in and accept one which cannot be activated, it will still have to be replaced in due course to make it compatible with others from different suppliers.
My sister and sister in law both have smart meters which do work, but are still being sent estimated bills which are greatly in excess of their usage.0
