Banks will be required to introduce SMS payment veriification

All this talk of verification, why?
It would make sense for banks to introduce 'notification' not 'verification'. They already have verification.
That way if your card or account was compromised by whatever means you would know straightway and could contact your bank to notify them of attempted fraud.0 -

Some bank(s) - such as Starling - already give you real time notification on their app as soon as your debit card is used. I guess this new verification system is designed to stop unauthorised transactions occurring in the first place.0 -
Taking the title at face value, will this mean that owning a mobile phone will be a prerequisite for opening a bank account or will the banks be forced to provide phones to people?0

The BBC report on the link below is saying that banks will have to introduce mobile phone verification for online payments from Sept 2019. I had not heard this before nor seen any discussions on this forum.
It is being discussed on this board, although only yesterday and only as a side issue because it was mentioned and I also hadn't heard about it at that point.

What happens if you are in an area with no mobile signal?
There are still rural areas with no or unreliable signal.0 -

All of the major networks now offer wifi calling so provided you have a working internet connection & compatible phone then being in a low/non existent signal area is a non-issue.0 -
It seems that on the O2 network Wi-fi calling only works for voice type calls and not for SMS messages.

I have an ongoing discussion (i.e. Complaint) with First Direct about this, but basically I can't use my FD cards online any more. For a quick background this is from First direct correspondence. We've moved from using a Verified by Visa (VbV) password to the One Time Passcode (OTP) which is sent by text message. The OTP is more effective at preventing fraud when using Debit and credit card online. It also means customers will no longer need to remember a VbV password and that the bank complies with new requirements set out in the Payment Services Regulations.
If you don't use a mobile phone, we're currently able to send the OTP to your email address or you can call us on 03456 100 100. However, we might not be able to do this in the long term.
I now have two problems ...- We have no mobile signal at home, hence this will never work for us.
- I've asked to use the email option, however as my email address is the one registered to our joint account .. my wife won't be able to use cards online. And we have no idea how long this email will last
I've been a happy FD customer for a couple of decades, but this debarcle has me looking at other options.0 -
How hard would it be to get another free email address just for this purpose? The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0
