I can't find the post I was going to quote but I think Gardener's World did an experiment on 'phases of the moon' gardening a few years ago (not had a tv for many years) but I may have watched on i-player when it was still allowed. The differences were not huge but the 'moon based' crops did better. Don't dismiss this out of hand - the moon controls our tides so it is quite powerful. My mission in life is not only to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some Passion, some Compassion, some Humour and some Style.NST SEP No 1 No Debt No mortgage11

Jack Monroe has a recipe for bread cooked in a slow cooker. I've tried it a couple of times and it does work.13

Nargleblast said:In the debate about the link for that author, I haven't read any of his stuff but the mention of lunar gardening sparked my curiosity. I have heard of this before. There are keen gardeners out there who plant different seeds and seedlings and do different gardening jobs according to what phase the Moon is in. This is related to the effect of the Moon's energy during different phases, and the idea is that things grow better when planted at certain times. It would be interesting to see if any OS preppers have tried this and what success if any they have had. Unfortunately my fingers are only occasionally green.

I don't absolutely dismiss moon planting per se: plants depend on water, and water is influenced by the moon, so there's probably a scientific basis for a small effect.2023: the year I get to buy a car8

I have a biggish tesco order coming this morning, adjust from lots of frozen stuff to more canned and dried foods, flour/yeast etc. I can't have a stove (council house) so was wondering what ways would there be of baking bread or cooking if we end up with power cuts? I have a BBQ and just brought a camping stove, wondering about getting a pizza oven for garden, may be able to make flat bread?
I am getting obsessed with saving energy as well, wondering if its cheaper to run a bread maker or the oven to make bread? Although probably cheaper to buy if i can get hold of, last few online shops (iceland/tesco) whether bread has arrived has been hit or miss, and never the quantity i have had in order. Although i haven't noticed a shortage in shops, the social supermarket i volunteer at used to get loads of bread donations from the stores, last few week there haven't been any loaves, sometime a few prepacked rolls but nothing like we were getting before.
Naan bread for example is cooked in a frying pan.

I've had a change in rates for gas & electricity email too. Plus one from our internet provider who hasn't realised they can be replaced (and will be) with a mobile phone and a hearty SIM. We can then hike it to whichever floor has the highest number of Wi-Fi requiring devices, which should wean the younger folk into either sorting their own contract or spending more time with their parents...10

Some time ago, there was a lot of talk on this site about using a Kelly Kettle, especially to make sure you could get a cup of tea in an emergency. Has anyone used them for other things like baking?8
