The Prepping Thread - A Newer Beginning ;)

It doesn't need to be stuck at the top but it's been there as a sticky for some time now and people are used to that so asking for it to be re-stickied is a convenience move if people are finding it hard to trace since it was un-stickied not because prepping should have precedence over anything else. M&M or any other of the board guides have the final say on if it is or isn't stickied again.0

Thank you, Silvasava, I've done just that. Whether we get stickied or no, I'll be able to find it now!
I'm trying to fit all my festive preps into one week here, before I start my "mopping up" treatment. However, the family are being remarkably reticent about what they'd actually like to receive (within strict budgetary limits!) for Christmas, so it's a bit - well, difficult! Ah well, I can get the food side of things sorted, if nothing else.
Just for your information, another Icelandic volcano is wobbling a bit; Mt. Hekla. May or may not lead to anything, and if it does, it may not have any implications for us, though it probably will for the indefatigable Icelanders. I think overall I'd be more inclined to fret about what's going on in Westminster; I suspect the political undercurrents there will be reaching tsunami proportions over the next few days! That said, I might not bother to fret at all, except about the upcoming festivities...Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -
I bookmark interesting threads in a folder called threads I am following. I update the link each time and delete the old one which has the advantage of taking me straight to the latest post. I find the subscribed threads tool doesn’t always do that. The disadvantage is that bypassing the list of threads on the front page means I sometimes miss new and interesting threads for a day or two. But in practice there isn’t enough time to follow every thread so it works for meIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

Hekla is the big one in Iceland, but a little while ago they said that the one that erupted in 2010 is a smaller mountain next to the main caldera in that area and the main caldera's magma chamber is rising and unstable now. Iceland being on the edge of the two tectonic plates between the Americas and Europe will always have volcanic activity but it rarely does anything disruptive to the extent of 2010.0

ahh, I get it, sticky for convenience but y`see I thought it was about money saving not spending as in going overboard buying stuff just in case. That spending rather than saving would put the thread in a less important category0

I get the feeling I might know you Silverspirit, you sound very like someone who used to post, I might be wrong though!0

thriftwizard, loved your post about your ideal place. And many, many positive vibes to you for your "mopping up" operations.2023: the year I get to buy a car0

There have been a couple of stories on the Daily Fail website in the past few days about ordinary folks, wives and mothers stocking up on shelf-stable groceries with an eye to post-brexit disruption to deliveries and/ or price hikes.
I'm gradually building my own little Mount of Olives in jars from Liddly (went up tuppence recently, shocking!) and will add more olive oil and tinned sardines. These are things I eat anyway, daily in the case of the first two items.
I have acquired two cast-off garden hoses from a lottie pal but they only had one endpiece, but I lucked out this afto in the charity shop and got another endpiece for only 50p. I have gardened without hosepipes for 14 years now, but I lost crops this summer which could have been saved, and am pre-positioning myself for a 2019 drought (it'll probably bucket it down then).
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I've been out this afternoon with the big garden fork again - the left hand border, underneath the big rhodendron and the huge mahonia ... I cleared it a couple of years ago, and events overtook me, the brambles were starting to come back, and baby rhodies, and grass, were making their presence felt. The ground crop there is winter savory, so I know it will recover from my digging at the brambles. There's still more to do, but its good.
I'm wondering about filling that whole area with wild garlic - I have several plants now, and it reproduces their habitat pretty well. Bulbs would be good too - not garlic bulbs, but ones that grow in shade etc. Not just for pretty, but for eating - does anyone know anything like that?2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Prepping isn't just about buying in equipment and goods it's as much about mental resilience and positive mindset as about anything else. Strength of character and self belief helps but if, as recently happened to a very good friend of mine, someone she thought she knew and respected suddenly turned on her completely out of the blue and was unacceptably rude for no real reason then it's easy to understand why that's not quite enough to keep you level. What you need to cultivate as a trait is an attitude that says it really doesn't matter what anyone thinks about your take on preparedness, their opinion doesn't have any relevance to what you think or do and they have no power over you. Your choice is the only one that matters. Standing strong on your own hallowed ground is where your strength will be the fullest.0
