  • Some time back, a FM was asking about power-banks for their daughter to carry, to charge a phone, in the event of emergency.

Don't know if said FM managed to get fixed up but, if not (and for the benefit of anyone else looking for pocket/purse sized power-banks), I present exhibit A. :)

I have been lazy this morning and perusing some house !!!!!! but had the sudden thought that when looking I dont just think how nice the house is but also if we have a total societal breakdown (be that zombies or any other situation my active imagination can come up with) will I be able to survive. Does anyone else do this? and if so what things are you looking for in a end of the world house senario?

Erm, yes! To be fair, our current house is pretty dam' good in doomstead terms, in that we have a sensible amount of accommodation & storage space, a sensibly-sized & very productive garden, close to all amenities but within a stone's throw of a clean river & open countryside and only a short bus-ride out of a fairly big city/conurbation, not to mention the sea. It's also on a quiet street and quite unremarkable from the outside. However, there are times when I'd trade it all for a reasonable-sized living room (ours is just 12' x 12' which is pretty tiny for 7-8 people on high-days & holidays. But only takes minutes to warm up) and a garden big enough to grow veg as well as fruit, herbs & chickens!

My TEOTWAWKI house would have a good-sized kitchen/diner with a separate, north-facing larder, complete with high mesh window & slate or marble slab. (Possibly even a sunken fruit/produce store, like my brother had in his last Rectory.) It would include my current range cooker, which can be run on Calor gas with a small DIY modification. The living room would be a bit bigger than our current one, with a fireplace big enough to take a woodstove that can also be used for cooking - maybe with a back-boiler too. Enough bedrooms or other space (garden lodge?) that all The Offspring & hangers-on can come to stay, and a water supply that has a logical "run" rather than the current ramshackle arrangement whereby the bathrooms are as remote from the boiler as they can be, without actually being in a different house! South or west-facing roof space, allowing us to run a decent number of solar panels. And a garden big enough for fruit, herbs, chickens, a greenhouse, polytunnel and vegetable beds too, so we don't need an allotment!

Not to mention tucked away inconspicuously in a thriving community, with its own shops, pub, church, post office & surgery... think I'd better go & get a lottery ticket!

  • I'd go for something well away from large population centres, as the first thing that would happen is that 'men' from the estates would go marauding around the nearest villages (well, not quite first - after they've realised their new TVs don't work and burned all their local shops).

Having been right in the middle of rioting, looting and arson within the last few years, I have an exceptionally dim view of the masses - especially as, contrary to the claims of TPTB, the people doing it were mostly white men in their mid thirties - forties who did not live in the area, but had travelled from areas of large scale social housing around 3 - 5 miles away. I saw them. I heard them. They were not local youths that were trying to break into the gun shops and discussing plans to hit the next town along as they walked back to their cars from the electrical stores (those attacks were deliberately not reported - it wasn't just a couple of areas, it was definitely far more widespread).

By the way, this thread is the devil to find now it's not a sticky.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

:( Yeah, I'd like it to be made a Sticky again, can someone ask the MSE PTB to make it so, please?

  • potentially interesting, this concept of prepping, I suppose I should go through my cupboards first, make some space before I make a list

You lazy lot. Call yerselves a prepper? Fancy having to work to find the thread ;)

I agree actually. It was a doddle to find but I think we've been spoilt. Everyone else on OS has to look for the threads they want to post on really. I've no problem with it being stickied, it is easier for me as well. I just have to wonder why we get pampered when essentially we were stickied because of bad behaviour. It's a bit like being on the norty step huh :D

We'll all just have to talk more about prepping to keep it on the front page :p
  • I had to look for the thread yesterday too but it was only on the second d page so wasn't hard to find! It's just that we're used to it having prominence on the first page and aren't used to it not being there.

Potentially interesting? if we don't make provision for ourselves who else is going to? I prep because I want a safety gap like a fire break between us and any 'happening' that is an 'immediate' likely or a once in a 100 year event to give us time to sort out a course of action be that trekking out of here or hunkering down until it's safe to do so or having the ability to stay in situ and let things settle and life return to a semblance of normality. I prep because if it IS at all possible I don't want to be part of the problem and don't want to have to rely on being rescued and take the emergency services away from those who DO need help. I know in many cases there will be nothing I can do to make any difference to what happens BUT if there IS, I want to be ahead of the game by a good margin.

We are lucky in that we've moved to possibly the best place to be to ride out problems, small town, very strong community at work, very self sufficient in that we have all we need by way of shops and services right here and within walking distance. We even have a brook running outside the front garden should we need a water supply and that's down to sheer luck as none of this was in the decision to move here. I feel safe here in a way I never did in South Hants and even with that in place I still will prep as much as I can with the absolute certainty that no matter how lovely the situation here or the people in a crisis we'd be the only ones to sort out the problem as everyone else would be trying to sort out their own lives! Prepping is sensible!
  • M&M please would it be possible to RE-STICKY this thread and any subsequent incarnations if people really are having problems finding it? Not because we're still on the NAUGHTY STEP but to make life easier for the posters who contribute to the prepping side here, thanks in anticipation, Lyn xxx.
  • scuse me but I am a newbie. Why does this particular thread need to be stuck at the top. There seem to be equally important threads

I'm scratching my head too about a stickies - I just add any thread I want to follow to my subscribe list on my thread tools option that way I don't have to look for it?
