Thank you. Fortunately we should only be here for a few months and I'm only buying what we need. I must admit I could get used to doing all my shopping in Waitrose or Booths-used to love shopping there when we visited the Lake District

Thanks for the advice about slow cookers, I have managed to aquire my parents one which they put into storage when they moved so that's some pennies saved.
The prepping part of me vs the mummy part of me is having an issue with Christmas between the 3 children our house is full to the rafters of toys, I somehow need to find the balance.
The fuel saga still continues in this part of the world, DH called earlier and said that he had spent most of today looking for fuel for his truck for work.
This winter will be interesting...12 -

We did. Mum baked them with a wipe of marmite on for the teething baby to find we'd All gnaw happily. Then there's bread pudding, bread sauce & variations on summer pudding depending on the jam handy (so long as there is also custard)
As for cake?! heap with fruit & a lick of cream for a Rugby (as opposed to Eton) Mess, layer with jelly custard etc as a trifle, or just "glue" together with chocolate for "Dentist's Joy" pud...12 -

Roll into balls. Refrigerate to set, then dip in melted chocolate to coat.

Oooh, now that I've seen lebkuchen mentioned I'm thinking of German Christmas treats (my Mum was German). A bus ride away we have the warehouse for a shop called the German Deli. I always used to buy my Mum something from there for Christmas as a special treat. She passed away in January and so in her memory I will buy some Pfeffernuesse and enjoy them on Christmas Eve with a glass of Asbach German Brandy.Christmas prep wise, it's just me and my DP. We have pudding already (bought in January). I make a cake (marbled chocolate and vanilla with chocolate ganache sprinkled with icing sugar on top), so otherwise it will probably just be some nuts, some nice beers, and some chocolate. Most of what we get is fresh, so I'm thinking I may get a nice joint of beef or lamb from Aldi when we go next and wrap it well and pop it in the freezer and at least that way if there is a disaster with food supplies we'll have a standby.Grocery budget in 2023 £2279.18/£2700Grocery budget in 2022 £2304.76/£2400Grocery budget in 2021 £2107.86/£2200Grocery budget in 2020 £2193.02/£2160Saving for Christmas 2023 #15 £ 90/ £36513

Absolutely agree. It is up there with 'leftover chocolate' or 'leftover wine'!

Crusts, torn old baguette and brioche, mixed with some egg and milk, a bit of spice and a little dried fruit, baked. Built like a brick s))t house and very filling when sold in square portions.
Great for impoverished back packers and no doubt a modern English version could be successful. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing18
