  • I added another oil lamp to my collection this afternoon, a nice little ceramic base, never used as the wick is new and all in working order for £2 from the local charity shop. I now have 1 large double wick lamp which really gives bright light and two thumb lamps with flat bases and a carrying handle and a tiny metal weighted bottom Kelly Lamp that was designed to use as a nightlight in a childs nursery. I think an oil lamp is slightly safer to use than candles so I'm pleased to have enough for our needs now.

Yes it does, although more like 4 or 5 feet, rather than 1 foot.

As for your "rather feeble torchlight thingie", you could keep one of these in your pocket.

4 or 5 feet would be fine - in fact there's quite a large area of my own in front of my front door (ie no-one would walk onto it anyway unless visiting my house). I'd be okay for a gadget/light that came on when I was still 20' or so away from it - knowing it wouldnt be triggered by someone on the road or a neighbour.

Next question - what is that top gadget called?/how much?/where from? (guessing they'll be on Amazon?)

I presume that one would get an electrician to fit it and it would only take them a few minutes?

It's called the Osram IP54 Door LED Up Down LED Luminaire, Cold White, 1.1 W.

It's available from Amazon, but I got mine from Home Bargains, for £2-99.

No electrician needed, as it's battery powered.

Mar I seem to remember minced meat should ideally be eaten within a month, but other meats for several months though they may lose a bit of flavour. I expect if you google if there'll be a helpful list somewhere :)

I recently made a stir-fry with pork that had been about 9 months in the freezer; it was perfectly safe, but didn't taste of much.

ETA The Good Housekeeping Institute suggests 4-6 months; after that it's still safe but the quality will start to deteriorate (as I discovered :))

    Not long I believe.

My mate put a chicken in his freezer, and it was dead the following morning. :D

It's usually a good idea to tag when you first put the [subsequently] Unidentified Frozen Object into the freezer. My little sister has just decluttered my parents' freezer & removed two bags full of out of date food - my parents are now having to replan the festive menu...

Me, I make very sure the food I want to eat is stashed in the little fridge which just happens to run at around -2.

As a family, we do also cook & eat "I dare you" meals, where three things are removed from the freezer, thawed & then desperately coaxed towards edibility. The chicken curry with apricot segments and onion rings was dashed toothsome!
(I'm told explorer scouts play a similar game with unlabelled tins & that at least one was dogfood - but that may be a Scout Story & anyway you may not sell food for dogs which is not fit for human consumption. The way my then-explorer-scout goes heavy with the chilli sauce, he could have been eating pease porridge with kale & not realised.)

Bob, does this tale, possibly renamed, ring any bells?

A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary.

Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to 'clean up' the bird's vocabulary.

Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even more rude. John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute.

Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arms and said "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behaviour."
John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude.

As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behaviour, the bird spoke-up, very softly, "May I ask what the turkey did?"
  • I've finally caught up with the posts (again). For me the best way of finding a thread is to copy and paste the https to a word document and note the post I was up to. Then when I want to go to the thread again I just paste the link from the word document into Google and instantly I'm there.

The only problem I have is when a thread ends and a new one is created. It often takes an age to re-find a thread. This time though the new thread was posted at the end of the old, which was great. Thanks to whoever did that.

Someone mentioned using pineapple skins (sorry I can't remember who). It sounds interesting though, so I'm off to Google pineapple skin recipes.
