It's a huge problem, isn't it :( sorry you're that unwell right now. Its very tough to pull back in the moment, especially when you've been bored and isolated cos of the illness and suddenly you're surrounded with good people . I think I did enough, but I've just needed to hole up and sit here for a few days.

Sorry to hear you and Mar haven't been well KC it's hard trying to pace yourself physically when there's nothing wrong with your faculties but your body refuses to cooperate!! Here's hoping you're both on the mend again soon XX

My long suffering OH found the gauntlets MrsL yay saves me a sewing job for now at least, they do feel weird though cos I'm used to the joined up sort but really worked well with the roast today.

The dodgy looking runner bean produced enough for me to do another batch of the pickle so I'm a happy girl.I haven't been able to make any for about 4 years so I'm gonna enjoy it with every meal probably!!

Making headway with the freezers just got a few bits of meat to vacuum seal and more apples to dehydrate tomorrow.

I did a few lists but need an in depth shopping list now for the few gaps I have spotted. Not a lot of stuff just some things are a bit lower than I feel comfortable with.
  • Ooh, I have been wondering how you were, D3. It's a long time since IKEA. [strike] 6 years of a different, considerably lovelier bloke for me, for a start[/strike].

I started my new job and am slowly adjusting to the shock of getting up at quarter to six each morning. However, the current route, thanks to extensive badly planned and overrunning roadworks means I have a twenty minute stroll through woodland roads to get there each morning - I pass three sweet chestnut trees, for a start.

Himself has also found part time work, which he is attempting to top up. But he won't be paid until the end of October at the earliest, and my redundancy payment isn't going as far as I would like it to.

Idiot Cat is attempting to supplement the cat food bill with this season's woodmouse population. Three today that I know of - Mousebreath is now comatose on the sofa, as he's been wreaking havoc and destruction in the garden since 7am.

Himself keeps on going on about emptying the freezer and cupboards, rather than buying anything. This makes me very twitchy in case he does it before money is extremely tight and the supermarkets continue to hoik up their prices the nearer we get to the next deadline.

He's also getting rather irritating about refusing to buy anything we don't need this very instant, which means he's leaving ridiculous bargains for good ingredients for somebody else to snaffle up. The most I'm getting from him is a twofer offer on washing up liquid or cleaning products instead of leaving the second one there because 'we only need one'.

However, there are lots of blackberries in the freezer and a big pot of jam on the shelf. So at least that's something that cost very little.

And now, shockingly, I have to go to bed. This feels sooo weird.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Having a significant other who doesn't get it is Dashed Frustrating. I share your pain in seeing excellent opportunities & having the mutterer alongside mean you have to march past not quite hiding tears, but definitely contemplating Rohypnol and a partition wall concealing a storecupboard.

Some things he's halter broken to. The Persil pillar has been a domestic feature for over a decade since I laid down the cost per wash from the supermarket price & the Costco price & it was over 50% & I was right on the edge of reaching for the cast iron frying pan, cutting out the divorce lawyer.

Many others are achieved by stacking at the back of cupboards which he cannot fold over & peer into. The offspring can blow the gaff, or worse, eat the lot & not tell me but so far they cooperate as My stashes mean their easy after school meals, and their supplies of condiments they adore (anyone else buy 6 bottles of Cholula sauce at once? May just be my lot who add it to almost everything except breakfast cereal)

Do I recall you bought & portioned & sorted the cupboard & he then 'cooked for you' & make a complete havers of 90% of your hard work? It may have been someone else, but I was never so close as to PMing the victim with a 'say you were blackberrying in Lancashire & I'll alibi you'. Preventing that happening Ever Again is one of those psychological manoeuvres that takes very deft footwork. Or packaging with labels like "Toe of Newt", "B anana Chilli compote [don't ask me what the profanity filter thinks I mean?]" & "food experiment" (William Gibson used that in a fictional volume to shield a trainee's milk from the communal fridge - I like the idea but admitting something is food is tricky around teenagers) - safer to stick to Shakespeare & Never Explain the translation.

Has anyone any other (even partially successful) techniques for building up stores without triggering others' sense of tidiness & decorum? Says she with a thoughtful eye on top of the wardrobe where I could fit quite a lot of tins but would need a stepladder & possibly a chiropractor.

JOJOOOO :) Yay!! Blimey is it that long?? Oh that was such a wonderful meetup and I was fit then lol . Soo much has happened since including my dear friend moving to be nearer her poorly dad but we're still in touch.
A shiny new bloke eh?? Good for you I'm sure you will housetrain him eventually it takes a while..
DFV and JJ I find having an OH who doesn't cook helps infinitely as he never would dream of even looking in the cupboards he is just used to 'full' cupboards so for me it's a piece of cake to sneak things in whilst he's at work too usually!
If it's something you use regularly would they notice if you weren't quite out of something and oops just so happened to get another?? You know me I hyperventilate when I get below double figures...
Found some stonking deals on Amazon for pantry items, you just need to know your prices but maybe a delivery whilst they are elsewhere or a delivery to work /neighbour/friend :)

There is a firm on there Mar called Just Ingredients who do dried goods at a reasonable price (DO CHECK THO) I always price check everything as sometimes what looks a great deal as we all know isn't necessarily.

I live round the corner apparently to a Costco but my husband has banned me from joining it..I just found out I can do an online order mmmmm :):)
  • I went into minor panic mode this weekend when I discovered that OH had moved the rocking chair in the downstairs bedroom, which doubles up as his football-watching room. I'd stashed a large pile of tinned chickpeas & tomatoes underneath it, and was expecting an indignant squawk of, "What the heck...?" But this time he'd just removed them & stashed them neatly under the computer chair, without any fuss at all.

    It's only taken 35-odd years...

Re the grab bags, apparently September is "Preparedness Month" in the US and some other countries, and the idea seems to have spread into the media over here (like Black Friday :D), unfortunately just when things are making us feel more unsettled than usual already!
I don't think Brexit is likely to force us all to flee from our homes. A grab bag is of course a sensible thing to have, especially if you live in an area where flooding is likely, for instance, or in a block of flats where people would need to evacuate if there was a fire, or a prolonged period with no water supply.

I have a grab bag organised. Anyone who gets a trip to hospital at short notice and too ill to pack a bag and too ill to tell my oh where my nighties are or what to put in my toilet bag needs a grab bag. The ambulance driver said everyone should have a little bag packed just in case. A carrier bag with pjs and soap and toothbrush is all that's needed he said along with your pills or a copy of your prescription!
