The Prepping Thread - A Newer Beginning ;)

I think Covid and the war in Ukraine changed things. The thread used to be about prepping for things like flood or illness and people sensibly stocked up on food, toiletries and medicine. Those really organised had stores of water and plans to evacuate with tents and supplies. Then we had the uncertainties of Brexit and it was useful to stock up on some items if we were worried about supplies continuing.
I don't think any of us prepped for a pandemic but what we learned was that communities do come together in hard times even if it doesn't last, and then the war showed us that when people have to abandon their homes and homeland they literally leave with nothing.
Now, much as most preppers would love to have stocks of food in, prices prohibit this.
I'd love to hear others views.Spend less now, work less later.8 -

What do you do about backing up what is on your computer? Does everyone do it to the cloud storage? If you back it up on flash drives, do you put one in a safe place? Just backing it up to something in your home wouldn't make sense as it would not be available to save if you weren't home at the time. What do other people do to keep from losing pictures and documents on your computer?6

Separate external hard drive for most things like documents, pictures, programmes, music and films. Cloud for gaming saves.

Glad to see this thread being revived as I’ve learned so much here over the years. Definitely made things easier at the start of the pandemic. I’ve just joined Costco which I know some of you use. And advice on what to get on my first visit as a member?5

I think what happened to the thread is that we've all been caught up in a slow-motion disaster, instead of the kind of sudden dislocation-of-reality event that most of us were prepping for. There isn't much time to spare to think about what you'd do in the event of a flood or a fire when you're battling flat out, day after day, to pay the ever-increasing bills and put food on the table, though of course floods & fires are still happening. Also, the pandemic - we were plunged into the sudden imposition of lockdowns, shortages etc., and now randomly-empty supermarket shelves & "supply chain difficulties" have become the norm, out here on the fringes anyway. You can't see a doctor or a dentist for love nor money, we're all aware that the "news" is anything but, and we've all lost all trust in our "leaders". I know my friends & family have nearly all started to follow my example by keeping & maintaining a good store-cupboard, after years of good-natured teasing about mine, and even planting things to eat. (Sometimes successfully... never underestimate the value of lots of practice!)
So in a sense, this thread & its predecessors could be called a job well done, as I think we all pulled through, one way or another, & had cause to be thankful for our preps. But random stuff is still happening, even increasing - wildfires particularly, around here; one last summer was very close to us - so it's as well to keep the ideas flowing and the awareness of potential problems up, without being obsessive (or dismissive) about it. Time for a revival? Or even a whole shiny new thread?Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)16 -
Middleson is setting about getting a place of his own. How did you start prepping & what might convince a young male engineer that it’s the smart thing to do?!

How about starting him with a box of a few day's worth of food - just in case.5
