There's the top down method of lighting too.
As you say, wood burs on embers, it doesn't need air from the bottom, as long as there's some kind of air going in, it'll burn. I've keep the door vent closed on mine and open the airwash one until it's good and red, then clode that one too and just burn one piece at a time on top of the embers.
I also, because I'm fed up of almost burning myself, don't bother with a lot of paper and a long match or firelighter thingy I found a blow torch I haven't used for a while [ it's fine to use just in case someone wants to scaremoneger] and I use that to light the kindling. I'll go back to matches or something when it's empty,
but it's great for now.
Thanks for sharing this !!!3 -
If you have enough GB of data on your mobile then you can tether your laptop so it uses your mobile phone data package…pineapple said:

So were we, and in the end we settled on an Anker PowerPort Solar 21W 2-Port USB Charger with which we're pleased (the more so since we got one for £70 delivered). Having said that though, we only use it for keeping a 10,000mAh power bank fully charged, from which we charge the phones as required. I have no idea if you can charge a head torch from it, unless of course yours charges from a USB socket ...Deleted_User said:I am keen to purchase a very basic solar set up ...
that’s what I did when wfh and an electrician needed to cut all the electrics for a bit.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?6 -
Or you can get a data-only SIM for your laptop if it isn't too ancient!newlywed said:

Was it a boiler stove you wanted? Other suppliers are available - the one I have is discontinued but the manufacturer still makes multifuel stoves.4

Thanks Herbily
I can't remember who mentioned them. From memory it was a person who's mother had brought hers across with her from... Sweden (?) and it would take anything but glass. Did all the heating, hot water etc....
I'll have good look through your links though. Ta very muchShout out to people who don't know what the opposite of in is.2 -
Ahem ... and today on Sky ...Si_Clist said:So ... today the National Grid assures us that "the lights will stay on".
Right then. Time to check your stocks of candles, matches and torch batteries ...Britain could face blackouts this winter under "government crisis plans", Bloomberg reports this morning ... The government told Bloomberg that it prepares for "all and every eventuality" based on "made-up scenarios". It says this particular situation is unlikely to happen because of the UK's "highly secure and diverse gas and electricity system".
What highly secure and diverse gas and electricity system!!!????
You really couldn't make this up, could you ...
We're all doomed13 -
Thanks for that. No, you couldn't make it up. Remembering blackouts in the '70's, I have been buying candles and tea lights for a while. I wouldn't mind betting that there will be a run on them now. I've also got torches and a stock of batteries. The other things that I have are battery operated lights, meant for cupboards, I think. I got mine in £l*nd. I think that they cost £2.00 each and I have one just outside my bedroom door for night time visits to the bathroom. Co*pers of Stort*Ord have clip on battery operated reading lights. All of them have very bright, white lights, so watch your eyes if you get some. They also have brightness adjusters. Not ideal but if there are blackouts at least I can read a book and not have to sit in the dark. I think that over the past few months, I've come to the conclusion that we have to prep in our own small way. What worries me is that there are those who can't afford to prep or blindly believe the like of what you have shared with us.Si_Clist said:

I would rather prep and not need it than not prep and need it. Ex Husband was someone who thought it was a load of scaremongering - happy to say he is gone and preps made for me and my kids. He will be cold and hungryMe, DD1 20, DS 18, DD2 14, Debt Free 04/18, Single Mum since 11/198

My bloke saw me in action at Costco & reckoned we could withstand a siege. I just smiled & thought "not until you've dug me a well, dear". He died of a heart attack before I could even suggest it, but I have hung onto all his cold weather gear.9
