I am keen to purchase a very basic solar set up ...
So were we, and in the end we settled on an Anker PowerPort Solar 21W 2-Port USB Charger with which we're pleased (the more so since we got one for £70 delivered).  Having said that though, we only use it for keeping a 10,000mAh power bank fully charged, from which we charge the phones as required.  I have no idea if you can charge a head torch from it, unless of course yours charges from a USB socket ...
Will definitely look into that. Thank you. I have a wind up radio that also works on batteries and some wind up lanterns. If there is a black out they will come in handy. Forgot about charging my phone! What a noodle brain am I.

we get power cuts fairly often anyway due to extreme rural location (approx once per week), and need to be prepared for more this winter I think x
I'm in that situation too and I'm all electric apart from a mutifuelstove. Can't help with the solar thing but I recently got a camping gaz stove (outside use obviously). I do cook on the multifuel but don't want to have to fire it up in hot weather.
