  • I thought there was a 45 day claim limit on Paypal. Is this not the case and if so is there any limit and what is it?

Without the tracking slip, you could be in trouble.

I sold an item on ebay, received positive feedback, etc etc. MONTHS later, paypal investigated the payment. I think they do this randomly with some items over £250 ?? They asked for tracking info, which I couldn't provide. Like I said, I'd sold the item months before and the buyer had left positive feedback saying they'd received it.

Paypal then took the money out my account, leaving me with a negative balance. Eventually some debt company called and I had to pay the negative balance.

Despite the fact that my buyer had confirmed they received the item, it didn't matter. £250 down.

So, without the tracking slip.... I'd fear the worst :(

God, this sounds like theft. How dreadful

It's possible to claim report a fraudulent transaction through your credit card provider beyond paypal's 45 day limit.

If the buyer can prove delivery, and that they sent it to the legitimate owner of the card, the claim will fail.
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

Why not get a Royal Mail 'Signed for Posting Book' (Product #: P1038)
& a roll of Recorded stickers (Product #: P2223) rather keeping loads of little slips

stupid question (as I already know the answer is "from Royal Mail") but how do you get the posting book and stickers?

  • Hello

I won't touch paypal with a barge pole since i have had 2 chargebacks where buyers said they haven't recieved the good several months later no questions asked the first one as a vespa scooter £800 guy later crashed it and said to paypal it was faulty and they refunded in full and the other one was a nokia moblie i had £120.00 again several months later a chargeback was given as it wasn't recieved in post both occassions poss feedback left.

It seems flawed that you can buy something and several months later do a charge back they seem to believe the buyer rather than the seller, and the seller loses everthing.

You need to listen to the advice from sagely Soolin (and frivolous Fay :)) – It’s six months. This is the nominal limit for a true chargeback. Chargebacks are a process provided by the international card schemes. When a buyer makes a claim through PayPal, this is handled solely by PayPal’s internal disputes processes. Confusingly, some people also refer to a PayPal claim as a “chargeback”. They’re not chargebacks in the accepted use of the word, when referring to payments by bank cards.

Most of the international card schemes put an upper limit on starting a chargeback of 180 days after the purchase. However, in America, at least, it’s possible to go beyond this. Where the purchaser is bringing a chargeback claim because the merchant has failed in his or her obligations under a warranty, the limit can go up to the end of the warranty plus the normal 180 days. Any chargeback rules are the ones in force in the purchaser’s country, unless the laws of the merchant’s country mean a merchant can’t legally agree to be bound by them.

Like the warnings on packets of cigarettes, the wealth warning at the top of the PayPal User Agreement has gone from non-existent to become ever bigger, bolder and more forceful in its wording. It now stands at what’s in the box.

Below is the sort of thing I feel PayPal should say to their users.
In using a PayPal Premier account, you will be taking card payments. The taking of card payments was intended to be the preserve of business. The system was set up on that basis. While PayPal offers a limited insurance policy in case of problems, your attitude towards taking payment with a PayPal account should be that of a business. This applies even if you’re only a private individual selling off unwanted items from around the house. Your care in choosing whether to accept a payment and the retention of any associated paperwork should be up to the
    standard of a business.

    re a seller:
as been said many times before. only use paypal if you have to and be esp careful for large value items.
limit the use to the total amount that you are prepared to loose.
my limit is about 50/100 quid with paypal. and i only take it from long term members with good FB.
i just wont accept it from dodgy peeps. ill take the neg FB first. bo11ocks to ebay/paypal.
    Get some gorm.
