Given the OP's usage pattern, an Inkjet will NOT be suitable !
That combined with Mono only, means Laser is his best (Only sensible?) option !

Why not? If it is being used a couple of times a week, it should work okay...

So, my suggestion would be to buy an HP inkjet printer, which can often be picked up for around £20 and sign up for the free instant ink plan which will give 15 sheets of free printing a month and free ink cartridges for as long as they keep the plan open.

some ink printers are designed to be used daily. If they are not used, the ink dries, or clots. this blocks the head and/or pipes. Same if you put an ink printer near a heat source.

Most ink printers print in colour, which when it runs out cost another cartridge and will stop printing. The op only use black, but the printer often squirts a few other colour to make you purchase new ink. A subscription to something you rarely use - as a recommendation????

Laser will be the cheapest option. Thermal is another choice, but not a good one.

Personally would look for a laser on ebay that was popular brand and one you can get cheap cartridges for, then buy that laser.

not looked it for problems but this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brother-HL-1112-Mono-Laser-Printer/291633473199? seems ok, and you can get 5 toners for £31. Perhaps a cheaper lase with more expesive toners may be more suitable, since you do so little?

    OP said "used only rarely"
Thats a death sentence for any InkJet

OP in a later post has also said twice a week, so maybe not quite as rarely as rarely would normally imply.

Why not? The subscription is free and HP send all the ink you need so provided you don’t print more than 15 pages a month, there is no ongoing cost. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

  • 15 pages a month?

    3.5 pages a week?

once I have bought a printer , I am not having any company dictate what I can and cannot do

You don't HAVE to print 15 pages per month (to get the free ink plan) ... you are limited to a MAXIMUM of 15 pages per month. ;)

Sounds like that could be your lowest cost option, if you're only printing 2 pages per week (8-10 pages per month). If you think you may occasionally need to do a printing blitz then go for a mono laser.

Reading up, it could be cheap, just print 1 page every second or third day to keep the ink flowing. But when the cartridges dry out, or become faulty? Wont you have to purchase new ones?

Surely it would be cheaper getting no plan, and compatible cartridges?
