  • I have this problem too it is caused by soap, shampoo and hair. I bought some sink strainer things and every week I pour a little soda crystals and boiling water down the sink and bath and so far it has really helped

I posted on the Home and DIY board the other day because my kitchen sink was blocked, I used a few different chemical cleaners and a plunger and nothing worked, I had to take the u-bend off and empty the gunk out.

Somebody suggested putting caustic soda and hot water down?

    Good luck :D

Normally, if you put soda crystals down followed by a kettle of boiling water, a couple of times a week you will not get this problem. If that doesn't work, then Kim and Aggies more extreme method is you mix up

    1 cup of borax
    1 cup of salt
1 cup of bicarb of soda

put it down the sink followed by

1 cup of vinegar quickly followed by a boiling kettle of water.

I've been told not to put any fatty stuff down the sink,as scum build up, used the plunger and had it cleared up recently.Caustic soda is apparently a good solution...only where can it be bought??

  • Kim and Aggies method of Borax, bicarbonate of Soda, salt and white vinegar does work extremely well! i had a blocked sink and it cleared it so quickly and got rid of the smell! I did hear however that from June, Borax is to be replaced with Borax Substitute which does the same jobs! But if you prefer traditional Borax it will still be available in Boots until june!
  • Hi,

I hope this is the right place for this.

My bath plughole is gradually getting slower and slower and now when I have a shower I find myself standing in a couple of inches of water as it's so slow. OH must have nearly filled the bath, he spends so long in the shower.

I've cleared all the hair etc that I can from it but still no joy. In the past I have bought expensive drain / plughole unblockers which have made little difference. Any suggestions as to how best to take this would be appreciated.

    TIA

Half a bag of soda crystals down the plughole. Leave for a bit and then sluice it down with plenty of hot water. Does the trick rightly.
