Garage repair created new fault

It’s an 08 Megane
Shake your bum style? Manual power assisted steering or new type? EPS or Electronic power steering?
OK so I used to own one of these you tell me if you have these symptoms.
Put the card in press the botton and the steering lock wont disengage?
The car says "Steering error"
The car wont start?0 -
Shake your bum hahaha
It’s an estate.
Yep. That’s the one.0 -

OK so If you have the manual power assisted steering column The column itself is not the issue here, Its a power auto locking mechanism that is bolted the side of the steering column if the locking pin cant lock because the bolt inside has come away from its motor and sprocket or vise versa or the motor isn't running the PCB board tells the car its not disengaged or engaged and wont allow the car to start.
Bad news, this motor is available brand new from Renault at £329 I paid for one but ring Renault and ask how much they are now may have reduced the price. Hence why I suspect the garage wanted to fit a whole salvaged column and hope not to give you that dealers expense. But if that column has the same issue you've paid out for nothing.
These are not coded to the car they operate on the can bus network to talk to the immobiliser module no need to code them at all.
you can get the locking mechanism to work by smashing on the steering wheel the car will start, until it fails completely.
You can have them reconditioned, its usually the PCB that fails this requires a capacitor and reflow to get it back to life again.
If you have power steering that is electronic, it is "coded" they redesigned the whole system from its predecessor, it gives the same issues as above and usually given a hearty wollop will work till they completely fail. Again a column is not necessary the modules unbolt from the main steering shaft, these can repaired too by a reconditioning place like above.
Warning though to having them reconditioned will work for a while but then tend to fail again these boxes have a end of life and you repair one bit it fails on the next shortly after. I would by a new one from Renault, they are pricy but if you intend on keeping the car for a while longer then I would say have the garage fit a new steering lock mechanism if you want rid recon it and get shot of it.
This is the manual steering lock mechanism. The only way you fubar this install is that the main bolt that hold it to the column is not left hand threaded meaning if you turn it left hand it will tighten it and right hand will loosen, if its tightened too much its locks in place and you need to drill it out our buy a new column.
This is the Electronic one as you can see ontop of it is two electrical connectors is different. this one is still on the column but as you can tell with the bolts on the right it unbolts from the chasis of the EPS system column. this can be sent away and coded and repaired but again recons only last so long.0 -
Just reading through this and guessed it was a megane as soon as steering lock was mentioned. Can't remember the precise details as mine lunched it's own engine 5 years ago but it's well known that you can't transfer steering locks as they are coded to the key. Worst car for reliability I ever owned.0

The initial fault was coded as power steering motor failure. This was replaced and the subsequent failing was the steering fault.
The part they’ve sent off is electronic and to do with the steering mechanism. It was from my car and apparently had to have data uploaded from it and downloaded onto the new (well, used) part. They’ve apparently fitted this and all seems to be working again.
My issue is having to pay £100 more for this after paying £510 for the original steering column (motor).0 -
And actually, yes, they did knacker the initial column repair up by threading the screw wrong and snapping it. They had to order a new one.0

That's what everyone thinks, But ive put in 4 in the past without even having to fire up Renault clip and coding them in. The one I bought new plug and play.0 -

The issue we have here is that, one part failed then another failed, if you cant evidence the fact the two are the same failures, I would say it is for you to pay them.
As bitter pill it is to swallow, you would know not to take it back to them in the future. If you have trusted rapor with them then negotiate the price.0 -
I get that to a point. But they have said the second fault was caused by that part being disturbed when repairing the first.
It just seems to be going on forever. And I wasn’t told about the part being sent away until I rang for an update (5 days after it had been posted off).0 -

If they bought a manual assisted column (and it sounds like they did as the first time they had to drill the anti theft bolt out to remove the locking mechanism) then disturbed the Anti theft device (small metal box in pic above). trouble is you could argue the column wasn't the fault to begin with and the steering lock itself that they didn't replace the first time and damaged it drilling out the anti theft bolt from the OLD column when it could have been left in situ so they couldn't have purchased a column with the lock on it. Plus no authorisation to send it off did it off either, did it on their own back, could mean they're liable for cost the part. But and like I said if you have rapor with them then try to negotiate. If they wont negotiate, pay up and note on the receipt Paid under duress. and decide if you wish to make a dispute with garages business owner, if they wont budge, letter before court action, if no response or no negotiation, then SCC. The choice is yours.0
